New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

When I think of how God works in the life of the pilgrim, I remember the tireless work my dad put into preparing the soil for his garden. Just as he patiently readied the earth, so too God prepares the pilgrim’s heart to receive an encounter with Divine Love. Seasons before we become aware of the movement of God’s love in our life, and long before we see any evidence of the fruit of that love, seeds of faith, hope, and love already are growing in our pilgrim heart.

—Karla M. Kincannon, Creativity and Divine Surprise: Finding the Place of Your Resurrection (Upper Room Books, 2005)

Today’s Question

When you look back, do you see moments where God was at work even before you realized? Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.
—1 Corinthians 3:7 (NRSV)

I look to my time in the church of my best friend in middle school as well as the steady but quiet faith of grandfather. Thses independent examples of faith in action were, in hindsight and reflection, the early foundations God laid out for me.
I will spend tomorrow on my own, so church and then shopping as I walk to mall as it is going to be a rainy day tomorrow. Megan and I will spend Monday at a state park not far from our home. It has a gorgeous manmade lake and we will picnic. I will walk and Megan will relax with a podcast. Monday is supposed to be gorgeous and warm and sunny. Megan is bummed about tomorrrow because I was going to join her and her dad at a ribfest at Heinz Field. It is the kickoff the Steeler’s new season with music and other activites. She and her dad may still brave it, but I do not relish getting wet when I am a vegetarian and enjoy the sides only.
Prayers for Ally’s and David’s health and finances, for Lou’s daughter’s mental health, for Jill as she recouperates from her first week of school, and for Robert’s and Erich’s individual and relationship counseling success. prayers for Mari and her staff. Thank you for your prayers and may God bless all who visit here.

I just read the Daily Devotional and thought of the New Every Morning family. So good to be connected with everyone and start the day with prayer. Blessings to all as we start this Labor Day Weekend.

Surely He has been at work all along. I can see the people, the relationships He placed in my life. Some for a very short period, others for much longer. I think of my mentors, some of which are no longer living. My first and second grade teacher had such a profound impact on my life that I knew so very early on that I wanted to be a teacher. My high school counselor was a member at my church and she and her husband were friends with my parents. She was also my sunday school teacher my senior year – she was incredible. I also think of my friend who now resides in Montana, and we rarely even talk anymore. When she comes in to town we will catch up. I miss my trips out there to see her. But, yes, God has a hand in all of it – and even tho it took me until my mid 30s to “get in the game” – how He has continued to grow me with other milestones and relationships.
A lazy day today – I should do some schoolwork – but haven’t unzipped my school bag yet. So much to take in on TV. Watching the Solheim Cup right now – had considered going to it as it is about 2 hours west of where I live. But – I just don’t follow this generation of female golfers that much. Then the men’s golf championship is on as well as the tennis. And college football later on!!! Pretty sure my fried and I will get together and watch a little bit of everything later on, and order in dinner.
I should get out and mow, as we are supposed to get the same rain as Julie tomorrow.
