New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today's Reflection

Our connection with God, ourselves, and others gives our life meaning. God created us for connection, and Jesus tells us the greatest commandment is to love God with our whole being and to love our neighbors as (and) ourselves.

—Kristen E. Vincent, Beads of Healing: Prayer, Trauma, and Spiritual Wholeness (Upper Room Books, 2016)

Today's Question

How might speaking your truth deepen your connection with others and with God? Join the conversation.

Today's Scripture

Love should always make us tell the truth. Then we will grow in every way and be more like Christ, the head of the body. Christ holds it together and makes all of its parts work perfectly, as it grows and becomes strong because of love.
—Ephesians 4:15-16 (CEV)

Prayer for the Week

God of light, help me to speak my truth. Show me how to be still so that I may hear your gentle whisper. In the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who has the power to heal me. Amen.

Today's Reflection

In speaking my truth, I had helped create a safe space in which others could speak theirs. I was not alone; together we would find connection. Together, we would hear Jesus call us beloved sons and daughters.

—Kristen E. Vincent, Beads of Healing: Prayer, Trauma, and Spiritual Wholeness (Upper Room Books, 2016)

Today's Reflection

Speaking honestly about who we are is the way to heal our heart. And we are multifaceted. We are—first and foremost, beginning, middle, and end—who God created and calls us to be. We are also everything that has happened along the way: the ups and downs, the highs and lows, the trauma, the pain, the questions, the hope, the joy.

—Kristen E. Vincent, Beads of Healing: Prayer, Trauma, and Spiritual Wholeness (Upper Room Books, 2016)

Today's Question

Why do you think it’s important to speak your whole truth before God and others? What difference can this make for you? [questions adapted from Beads of Healing by Kristen E. Vincent] Join the conversation.

Today's Scripture

The woman, full of fear and trembling, came forward. Knowing what had happened to her, she fell down in front of Jesus and told him the whole truth.
—Mark 5:33 (CEB)

Prayer for the Week

Today's Reflection

The good news is you can start small. Take baby steps as you practice being still. Sit outside and watch the birds for five minutes. Use an app such as calm.com for two minutes. Write one paragraph in your journal. Try praying. Turn the radio off when you’re in the car.

—Kristen E. Vincent, Beads of Healing: Prayer, Trauma, and Spiritual Wholeness (Upper Room Books, 2016)

Today's Question

What small steps can you take to practice being still today?

Today's Scripture

A great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.
—1 Kings 19:11-12 (NIV)

Today's Reflection

Being still is hard, particularly in this day and age. Noise surrounds us; messages and alerts bombard us; supervisors ask us to work harder and produce more. When we do rest or take a break, we feel guilty, offering excuses and promising to work harder to make up for lost time. Add trauma to the mix, and being still becomes almost impossible.

—Kristen E. Vincent, Beads of Healing: Prayer, Trauma, and Spiritual Wholeness (Upper Room Books, 2016)

Today's Question

Does being still feel challenging or even threatening? If so, how and why? [questions adapted from Beads of Healing by Kristen E. Vincent] Join the conversation.

Today's Scripture

"Be still, and know that I am God!
I am exalted among the nations;
I am exalted in the earth."
—Psalm 46:10 (NRSVUE)

Today's Reflection

When we experience any type of trauma—whether violence, disaster, betrayal, death of a loved one—there may or may not be physical damage and there are varying levels of emotional damage. But it’s a sure thing, always and everywhere, that we experience spiritual damage. The shock and pain of the event pierces our hearts, that central place where we first encountered God’s love and from which all else flows, leaving a wound from which pours our deepest pain.

—Kristen E. Vincent, Beads of Healing: Prayer, Trauma, and Spiritual Wholeness (Upper Room Books, 2016)

Today's Question

Think of a time when your pain made you feel disconnected from God. Who or what helped you remember God's unending love for you? Join the conversation.

Today's Scripture

How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
—Psalm 13:1 (NRSVUE)
