David is an outlier. While the Israelites need armor, David needs five stones, a slingshot, and his faith in God. David’s … wise response is, “I cannot walk with these” (1 Sam. 17:39). David knows himself well enough to know that Saul’s armor is not his best defense. He trusts an internal prompting of the Spirit and his own self-knowledge above what appears to be the best strategy according to the experts around him. He removes the armor, and in doing so, he removes the burden of what others think he needs. David instead relies on what he knows will allow him to prevail over Goliath.
