New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

WAITING FOR GOD to deliver on God’s word is not easy by any means. As we wait, we may question the belief that God has given us a word upon which to wait. Our faith dances back and forth, and we need a believing community to remind us that God is trustworthy. All we can do to determine the accuracy of our hearing is wait and see what comes to pass. Faith, hope, and trust can be contagious within a faith community.

—Enuma Okoro, Silence and Other Surprising Invitations of Advent (Upper Room Books, 2012)

Today’s Question

When have you needed a reminder that God is trustworthy?  Share your thoughts.

Today’s Scripture

“Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us.”
—Psalm 62:8 (NRSV)

Prayer for the Week

Transforming God, as we wait, prepare our hearts to receive you.

Something More

As we enter the third week of Advent, let’s step back from the encroaching busyness of the holiday season to listen to God through the silence, thanking God for the gift of Emmanuel. Help others experience the presence of Christ by giving to The Upper Room.

    When things in this earthly life are difficult and challenging and when your heart hurts- that is when the testing comes and doubt enters in and when faith wavers – you may need a reminder that God is always near- closer than your breath. Those days come for me for sure – then I need to turn to His word and refresh my self in the fountain of His goodness.
    I find hope and faith in the power of this community of believers as well. The postings recently have been filled with such faith and wisdom- thank you all for your comments, scripture quotes, and prayers. I pray daily for you all- and I trust that you do as well for me.
    God hears our prayers – bless us as we wait the arrival of the King sent for all.
    My oldest daughter arrives today – my youngest has been here for a week. Today we will all be together and enjoy time with dinner and a show in the city. I will be so happy to just be with them. I pray for peace and harmony in my family. I pray for God to continue to shine His light and help my children to continue to trust in Him and to feel His love everyday.
    Thank you God for the blessings of family.
    Thank you for sending your Son to save us.

    Hear the voice of my supplication,
    as I cry to you for help,
    as I lift up my hands
    toward your most holy sanctuary.

    I am grateful my daughter, SIL and grandson are coming to church today for the children’s program and to hear the little bell choir I am in. I ask you to keep them in your prayers, they are a hurting family. My grandson is showing signs of anxiety. It is a heavy load for him, a 4 year old, to bear the conflict and issues of his parents. Thank you.

    Blessings and prayers for dear UR friends, those for whom you pray, and all who visit today.

    I need to be able to quickly remind myself of His trustworthiness when my mind is quick to wonder. Really, I should just wander into the awe of Him, His love, His plan, being called to be His own.
    A beautiful Christmas service yesterday morning, with a full house – pews overflowing with guests. Children drawn to sheep, camel and donkeys outside the church – under the warmth of a winter sun. A message on Our Prince of Peace. Embraces and a few words shared with others who also lost a dear loved one this year. May Our Great Comforter be very near to the broken-hearted in these days ahead.

    Off to church and then watched “Little Women”. Went for a drive to check the ski slopes. It was a wonderful, peaceful, restful day.
    Thank you all for your dear prayers. You are in mine as well.

    Psalm 28: 9 – O save your people, and bless your heritage; be their Shepherd, and carry them forever.

    The deer tracks criss-cross the snow in our backyard, and there are tracks of other critters too, including, possibly, a coyote or two. The light reflecting from the snow beautifies the winter colors, just as the light of the Christ child beautifies the winters in our lives – and all our days, all our seasons

    Today is ” Little Christmas Eve” in Norway and Sweden. Lowell and I will spend the day cleaning and picking up last-minute groceries. We will squeeze in a walk, too. I wish dear UR friends and visitors a blessed day and pray for you and your loved ones.
