New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

Before the light of dawn broke through my darkest night,
You knew me.
Before I wandered off to do my thing,
You knew me.
Before I tripped and fell from grace,
You knew me.
Before you formed me in my mother’s womb,
You knew me.

Before my birth
You set me apart
And said, “Never be afraid”
“For I am with you.”

—Kwasi Kena, “You Knew Me,” in The Africana Worship Book (Year C), edited by Valerie Bridgeman Davis and Safiyah Fosua (Discipleship Resources, 2008)

Today’s Question

How does it make you feel to know that God knew you before you were born?
Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

The word of the Lord came to me, saying,
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
—Jeremiah 1:4-5 (NIV)

Prayer for the Week

Abba, Help us to see beyond ourselves,
and see you in ALL of the world.
It is because of your goodness and
in response to your grace
that I pray . . . Amen.

—Prayer excerpted from Ray C. Jordan, “Help Me to See You” (Psalm 42), in The Africana Worship Book (Year C)

Loved but in a manner as if he orchestrated the life I live for a reason. So there is curiosity also, why God gave me the life he did when he knew me intimately before putting me here.
The plumbing finally got done by a very nice man who said he would gladly do all my future plumbing work. I need only indicate to the disatacher that we have this arrrangement. I also needed a new garbage disposal he found when he was replacing the kitchen faucet, so a longer and more expensive job than originally planned.
Prayers for Ally as she seeks a means of supplementing her and David’s income, may God provide a way. Prayers for April and her loved one to each provide joy to one another. Prayers for Jill and Becky as they spend the day together and thanks to God for their newfound closeness. Prayers for Lou and her family, for healing and safe travel. Prayers for Rick and Scott. Prayers for Robert and Erich, for safe travel to the Poconos and home after retrieving stored items.

I am unable to fully grasp how God works outside of time. His perfect plan surely is dependent on time as far as we are concerned, but it is of no concern or hindrance to Him. I have tried to do a better job of wrestling the logic of this and just being appreciative of my little space and realm.
Julie – as I consider your comment – I think God knew you could be a light for Him and be drawn closer to Him as you depend on Him. I feel like I long for Heaven more and have a better understanding that we were not initially made to experience the brokenness of this world. Our final destination will be so other – that these will indeed be light and momentary afflictions. I don’t mean to belittle, in any way, the struggles and hardships of your life. But, oh Glory Day, when we reach the other shore.
My sister and I weren’t bothered at all by the heat, as we took a long walk in a shaded area, ate lunch outside in the shade and then most of our bike ride was shaded. It was pleasant. And now, I am home, showered and don’t have to go anywhere this evening. Just Roger and I, and the recliner. Good for both of us.

I feel known. I feel loved. That God is truly present and wants a relationship with me. That God made me. There have been numerous times when I feel adrift and doubt seeps in. Sometimes God will send someone to ease my despair and give me hope. The God Who Sees Me, who saw Hagar and Ishmael in the wilderness. Thank You, God. Thank you to my NEM friends for being here. Know that I love this forum and how God has taught me and loved me through you.
