New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

We are preparing to move. For my part, there are boxes of books in several languages, each one feeling like an old friend. I have not seen some in many years, and when I do, there is a sense of celebration. Carefully, though, I am giving them away. . . . As my older brother reminds me, “Pass the books along. There will be others written. These will stay in your memory.” Our experiences — what we value, what we trust — will stay with us throughout our life.

—Ray Buckley, “Where We Bury Our Umbilical Cord,” in The Upper Room Disciplines 2024 (Upper Room Books, 2023)

Today’s Question

Think of a time when you let go of something or someone important to you. What stayed with you?
Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

The Lord God of Jacob blesses
everyone who trusts him
and depends on him.
—Psalm 146:5 (CEV)

A long time and dear friend let go in 2015 is still with me. Without him my experiences in Korea would not have been so deep and long lasting. Of course my wife made my Korea experience very deep and she was let go very unexpectedly in November of 1997. Add to them another friend, and my memories are expanded still more.
On the other side of the world there relatives of family who stayed in Germany, helped me understand my ancestry, and connected me with family of the same last name. I’m still connected through a hobby.
Thank You, Lord for these precious people in my life.

For me it is hard to let people go- so many many daily reminders that make it difficult although I worked at this. Prayers for all that have commented recently- I’m thankful for all but especially for Robert’s daily commitment- hopefully the applesauce making was a success today. I love to make home made applesauce. Prayers for Andrea and her daughter, for Ally and David, for April putting her gardens to rest for the season, and for Jill and her school unrest. May all find peace in the beauty of this fall day.

Thank you,Lou. Like Andrea’s post yesterday, I read NEM daily. This is a sacred place for me, a spot where God is present and all that come here.
What stayed with me after letting go? The memories …all of them…good and not so good. I feel some are God’s ways of leading me on my life’s journey. The 23rd Psalm comforts me.
    Blessings, dear NEM family.
