New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

Led by the insights and sometimes enigmatic stories and sermons of Jesus, I became excited by how one person, individually and as a part of a community, can live out genuine alternatives to the dominant culture. For me, this has meant thoughtful, intentional work on issues of race, lifestyle, gender, and parenting. These are large dreams. I did not give birth to them, and they are not completely my own. My passion is life-giving and carries the power of birth. It makes me feel more whole, more connected to my brothers and sisters. It strengthens my belief in prayer and the powerful healing of the Spirit.

—Dee Dee Risher, The Soulmaking Room (Upper Room Books, 2016)

Today’s Scripture

Speak out for those who cannot speak,
for the rights of all the destitute.
Speak out, judge righteously,
defend the rights of the poor and needy.

Something More

The work of The Upper Room has always been grounded in listening prayer and with full anticipation that God is doing a new thing (Isaiah 43:19). The unfolding of this global ecumenical ministry continues today with the naming of a new publisher, Rev. Kimberly Orr, a pastor with a heart for God’s people. Please join us in prayer for Kimberly and learn more about this transition here.

It is hard for me to perceive what the Spirit is calling me to do in these unusual times. Isolation has so many tentacles. It is easy for me, since I am quite comfortable being alone, to not recognize how much I am missing seeing people at church, diving into conversations, listening to what is happening in their lives. I know how frustrating teaching on line is – it’s just a whole other ballgame.
Right now, in this moment, this week – I wait with dad to hear about his test results. Since my sister is in Florida – the responsibility falls on me completely. I know he is getting anxious, as he expected to hear something yesterday. I know how much this isolation is a stress for him, and just shake my head in dismay as I think about the long winter ahead, now potentially including treatment.
Nevertheless – I cling to the goodness of God. Every. Day.

Intentionally I am a advocate for many causes. Some care for people’s health, basic needs, education, spiritual growth, and civil rights, Others care for the flora and fauna of our planet, environmental protection, and global warming-climate change. When I can I support these causes financially.. Most of this has come about since I obtained a computer and could take action on the internet.

Prayers for Larry and his brother, Marcy, Julie and Megan that the Lord carry you all through the situations you face. Prayers too for church members with issues that seem to be expanding. May the US make progress resolving the pandemic, economy, education of our youth, global warming, and healthcare. With Your guidance,Lord, this is possible. Thank You, Lord.

I intentionally pray for so many people and I, like Robert, support some causes financially. Giving to support the food insecure as well as organizations that help homeless animals, especially kitties.
Prayers for Jill and Larry, may Larry hear from his doctor today as the waiting is stressful. Jill, Megan told me a story regarding a teacher who did not allow his students to get a drink of water during their Zoom classes. I told her about Roger and his antics during your online teaching sessions and how you welcomed the laughter and smiles and felt more connected to your students. We both agreed your students are lucky to have such a person as their teacher through this difficult period.
Prayers for Robert and his generosity and thoughtfulness.
Prayers for Marcy who is missing today, may she be well.
Prayers for Ally who is also missing today and has been this week, I pray she is well.

I have been mulling over in my mind what it means to do soul work. From a Christ perspective at least it means what we do to care for our souls. It is important to create sacred space to do this sacred work. It may be a physical place (at home, it is my side porch. I also have a favorite corner at our downtown coffee shop. I also claim sacred space in my office for a few minutes as I drink my coffee before our morning conference call. In these places I pray, meditate on scripture, and on the daily question in our forum. Today, what intentional work has the Spirit called me to do? I will be intentional in my work: I will be salt and light to the offenders I work with. How can I best help them to be all they can be? I will step out of toxicity and will not do and say things which feed it. That may mean stepping away from certain persons and not reading comments on news stories and Facebook political posts. I also ask God to show me how to work for peace and justice, a work I feel God calling me to. As I have volunteered with homeless ministries and helped with voter registration drives. I’m looking for ways to make a difference while social distancing. Also, how can I heal and not tear down? Lord, show me what works You want me to do to build Your kingdom.
I came home Saturday and have been feeling pretty good. Sister Amy cooked dinner for us and I made the salad. Amy went home Sunday and I was sad to see her leave. Sunday, I rested. I took Monday off and went with David to run some errands. Wiped me out. I planned to go back to work yesterday, but was so tired, I stayed home another day. Back today, but sticking to light duty. David has been so helpful. Please pray for continued healing for both of us.
Jill, I continue to lift up Larry as y’all wait for the test results. Glad he has you to be with him, Praying for you too, as you deal with the worry. Glad you have Roger to keep up your spirits. Robert, thank you for your compassionate heart and for supporting causes which help other and help our planet. I too pray that we make progress in these issues, especially the pandemic. Lifting up your church members as they deal with various issues. God is near. Julie, I read somewhere that 30 percent of Americans are food insecure. Thank you for the compassion you show all creatures. Praying for Marcy, that she is feeling well and is back with us soon. Thanks to all for your wonderful prayers for David and me. Praying that our country can become united and we can be at peace with each other Blessings to all.
