New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

God’s grace gifts are the province of God to grant. The phrase “spiritual gifts” is unique to Paul’s writings, and the Greek word he uses is based in the word charis, which means “grace,” with the plural of that being charismata. This reminds us that all these gifts come from God’s grace; and so, it is helpful to think of them as “grace gifts,” the unmerited blessings God freely bestows upon us to help us grow in our relationship with God and fulfill our call to discipleship and ministry. Grace gifts are not self-made realities for which we can take credit. Their presence comes solely from the triune God, and they are, in reality, the first equipping tool God extends.

I believe the spiritual gift God has granted is the willingness to sit with someone who is suffering. To not have to fix the situation, but to just be present, to receive grief. I also feel part of this is also teaching others about the lament – should they be interested. These topics are hard for a lot of people, but I am drawn to them. Never saw it coming – but it is clear – God is asking me to do this.
Yesterday was not a good day at school, as I had minimal bandwidth for my apathetic students. Telling multiple students how to do something which was taught in September pushed me over the edge. I accept full responsibility for my lack of patience and gentleness. This morning, my prayer centered around Colossians 3:12…the “wardrobe” verse as my friend puts it…”clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience”. Today was much better.
A quiet evening ahead. The rain is north, so I believe I will be able to get a walk in after dinner.
Tomorrow I return to my doctor…will see what he has to say about my continued discomfort.
Dad, Becky and Don arrive home Friday.
