New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

Whether we are walking through valleys or through ordinary days, the practices that keep us rooted are the same. When things are going well, we sometimes lose focus and cut back on the habits that keep us grounded. Faithfulness helps us stay on the path, keeping us connected with the Holy One, so that we are ready to face whatever valleys we encounter.

—Beth A. Richardson, Walking in the Wilderness: Seeking God During Lent (Upper Room Books, 2020)

Today’s Question

What spiritual practices keep you grounded as you walk through the valleys and through the ordinary days? Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff—
they comfort me.
—Psalm 23:4 (NRSV)

Prayer for the Week

Holy One, my body, soul, and spirit hunger and thirst for you. Here in this barren wilderness, fill me with your living water. Shape me into the one you would have me become. Amen.

    Quiet time at the start of the day, worship, Bible study, talks with God on walks in the woods, and New Every Morning keep me going. Did more spackling on the water drip site and am now satisfied with it. It’s ready to paint. Searching for the furniture donation group I used three years ago. Will be glad to lighten the load and help someone.. Prayers for the.NEM family’s. needs and concerns. Safety for Julie and Megan, improved health and well-being for Ally&David, , safe travel to FL for Larry, Becky, and Don, progress on grading student work and Roger’s health for Jill. Our time with Pastor Sharon ends with today’s service, thankful that another pastor returns for Holy Week and Easter. This is a very small church, but ministry continues . Thank You, Lord.

    Consistent time each morning is an absolute for me. Memorization has been a nice addition, and reflecting on a familiar passage during a pause is helpful. I would also consider attending the cancer support group a spiritual practice – and this morning’s was very soul encouraging. New attendees continue to come, with heart-breaking stories. But the regular attendees step in to welcome, encourage, pray with and cry with these tender souls. It is challenging to keep one’s composure during these meetings. The lesson was on The Road to Emmaus – and how a cancer diagnosis challenges us to really examine what we say we believe. Is there a place for disappointment with God? More properly stated, we can express disappointment, but must also ultimately request His will. Just like Christ, in the Garden. Yes, we desire healing and comfort, but ultimately His will.
    Dad was waiting for me when I got home and I picked up a pizza and we went for ice cream. He stayed and watched golf for a bit and then headed home. I spoke with my sister this morning – I will be going to their house Thursday for dinner – so we can all be together on the anniversary of mom’s passing.
    Volunteering at the homeless shelter this evening. Have some more time to grade some more papers.
