New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

Some time after I began practicing scriptio divina, one of my professors, a practicing member of a Jewish Orthodox synagogue, said something that confirmed the importance of this kind of creative engagement with scripture. As an aside to a lecture one day, she said that the Jewish community did not value consensus about biblical matters the way many Christians do. She gave a brief description of midrash — the ancient art of inquiry used to discover meaning in the Hebrew Bible—and went on to say that argument and conversation are key elements in Jewish religious life. Suddenly Jesus at the Temple arguing his point of view took on a whole new meaning.

Today’s Question

When have you experienced an “aha” moment while reading scripture? What passage spoke to you? Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
—Proverbs 30:5 (NIV)

Prayer for the Week

Gracious God, your word says that you will always guide me. You are with me during every moment of every day. You will satisfy my needs when I feel frustrated, and you will strengthen me when life makes me weary. Help me to follow your ways as you lead me into a life of fruitfulness and joy. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

There are many passages or verses that have given and continue to give me “aha” moments.
My memory does not record them by book, chapter and verse. They reappear reading the Bible and or lectionary. Over time new ones appear. From this weeks lectionary, Jesus asking the disciples who they think He is and Peter’s answer, “ You are the Messiah” stands out. Thank You, Lord.

As we discussed this week’s lectionary in Bible study, we dissected the story Robert referenced. It is about Jesus and Peter walking on the water. When Peter takes his eyes off Jesus, he begins to sink or falter. It had never occurred to me to see this as a metaphor. When we take our eyes off the Lord, even today, we struggle and our trials and troubles overwhelm us.

I cannot recall a specific passage. What did come to mind is when my small group discusses a portion of passage – getting others’ take on it is so very meaningful to me. Hearing others share about their perspective and how it pertains to a current situation gives us the opportunity to step into another’s shoes.
Becky and I had a really good time in Florida – very laid back. It was incredibly hot – some days we only ventured out to the pool early in the morning. The last few days were exceptionally hot, there was an excessive heat warning. I also caught a bit of a cold, so did a lot of lounging around.
Went in to school this afternoon, following golf with dad, his cousin and daughter. I will be going in again tomorrow in an attempt to have everything ready, should I not be able to start the school year.
Had a wonderful session with my spiritual director this afternoon. It was helpful to talk about my concerns regarding the upcoming surgery, and willingly accepting assistance from others will I am laid up. I have been seeing her for almost a year now and am so grateful to have been paired up with her. She is using her gift well.
