Called to ServeNew Every Morning | May 27, 2021
In my experience people who have no homes and people who are food insecure do not read themselves as missing from this story. Instead, they see the importance of providing help for others in need. People who do not have enough for themselves read this text and want to find ways to meet the needs of others. People in material poverty feel the call to serve food and drink in the same way that people with enough material resources do.

How can you meet the needs of others today? Join the conversation.
Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink?’
—Matthew 25:37 (NRSV)
Prayer for the Week
Help me see Jesus in those around me. Help me see that Jesus is present among all people, including those who lack food, drink, and clothing and those who are strangers, sick, and imprisoned.

There are actions I take daily, weekly, monthly, and at special times that help others. I am thankful to be able to do that. Pearl is doing fine after her visit to the vet, 5 teeth came out and the remainder were given a very thorough cleaning. She ate when she came home, and had her normal breakfast this morning. We are very thankful. The car gets a new water pump today. The last time I had a new water pump installed was 1979 by my Dad at a college parking lot in the pouring rain. Need some thinner for the yellow paint. Have the C-clamp to hold the fence so I can cut the table top. “Listening’ prayer lessons began yesterday. Propane bills are now correct and have been paid. Did a spiritual gifts assessment . Prayers for the New Every Morning community of faith: Jill at school, with her Dad, playing golf or tennis, and the groups she supports; Julie and Megan’s safety at home, continuing legal issues, and health; Marcy’s physical and mental health, well being, sources of support; Ally’s job prospects and both David’s and her health. Miss the many people who were quite regular posters here, hope you are all well, in God’s hands. Thank You, Lord.
I give to our local (the first in the country!) public television station monthly. They were the home of Mr Roger’s neighbohood. They still have excellent programming for children as well as adults. Last Sunday when Megan and I were shopping I gave a large bag of cat food at the food drive the PetSmart was having.
I have some unconventional ideas for progressing in the divorce proceedings. I am hesitant to speak to my lawyer becuase I believe she will not cooperate. I will take it to the Lord.
Prayers for Robert and his new prayer practice and the good news of Pearl. Prayers for Ally’s job prospects and David’s results from his stress test. Prayers for Jill and Larry, may Larry’s arm return to normal and may Jill’s health remain well. Prayers for Marcy and her mental health and financial woes.
See a need, meet a need. It really is that simple. Are my eyes blind to those who cross my path? I think of the person who stands at the end of my exit ramp each day with his sign. I am very reluctant to help these people. There was a time when I took them warm food, but – I am reluctant to give them cash.
Robert – thank you for voicing what I left unsaid – part of my reluctance about taking the coaching position is that I feel like I do need to be available for dad.
A beautifully sunny day today with comfortable temperatures. Things are really winding down at school – I have time to read for pleasure. And I did just that – finishing a book I had started on spring break in Florida.
