Today’s Reflection
Before the light of dawn broke through my darkest night,
You knew me.
Before I wandered off to do my thing,
You knew me.
Before I tripped and fell from grace,
You knew me.
Before you formed me in my mother’s womb,
You knew me.
Before my birth
You set me apart
And said, “Never be afraid”
“For I am with you.”
—Kwasi Kena, “You Knew Me,” in The Africana Worship Book (Year C), edited by Valerie Bridgeman Davis and Safiyah Fosua (Discipleship Resources, 2008)

Today’s Scripture
The word of the Lord came to me, saying,
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
—Jeremiah 1:4-5 (NIV)
Prayer for the Week
Almighty God, speak to us today as you spoke to those who went before us. Tell us the stories of Your wonders and greatness. We are ready to hear them. Remind us once again of your grace and love. Help us teach your goodness to our children and the next generation. Amen. [prayer adapted from “Worship Resources for Juneteenth Day Celebrations” in The Africana Worship Book (Year C)]

Who else could know us before we were born? God certainly knows before our mothers even have hints they are pregnant. Parents know only the results they hope for. God knows what will happen before it happens. It takes time before we, ourselves, come to this realization. Communication is not always instantaneous. Many of us don’t learn of this until we read the Bible. No person, not even my parents, told me thta God knew me before I was in my mother’s womb. ACTUALLY, IT IS QUITE AMAZING! REASSURING! GOD LOVES US SO MUCH, GOD KNOWS US BEFORE ANYONE ELSE!
THANK YOU, LORD!
The fact that God determined not only what my body would be like but also my life while I was in the womb is disconcerting to me. I understand that he builds my body and that is amazing but that at the same time he is also ” constructing”my life gives me pause. This is because I have had a life marked by abuse and neglect and deprivation. I am now in much better circumstances and I thank God for my deliverance and blessings.
In a gentle way, you can shake the world.
