Today’s Reflection
Why do adults tend to lose their sense of childlike wonder over the years? . . . When did I decide that bending over and searching the sand for a piece of frosted sea glass was too much trouble? Why am I not exploring the sand with my feet, as if investigating the surface of the moon? . . . Today I intend to reclaim the wonder of childhood. I will get up from my beach chair and step out of my comfort zone, asking God to restore my sense of wonder. I will hold seashells in my hands and study the intricacy of each one. I will throw out misconceptions that tell me that maturing years are dreary and monotonous. Wonder is that divine spark that awakens my curiosity and deepens my awareness of God.

I do think some of us keep at least a hint of childlike wonder despite our age. It has expanded to see, experience wonder over time. As a northern New Englander, a Vermonter, lakes and ponds take the place of the ocean for me and mountains are what reach the horizon. Instead of seashells there are fossils in the stones found on the lake beaches. We have the wonder of snowflakes captured by Snowflake Bentley. Thank You, Lord, Your wonder is everywhere.
It has been warm lately here in Pittsburgh, so I have been walking in my neighborhood. I purposely do not wear ear buds, choosing instead to listen to the sounds of spring. The wonder of the Lord’s creation awakening after the dormancy of winter fills me with awe and thankfulness.
Being such a routine oriented person, I don’t think being imaginative and creative is necessarily in my wheelhouse. I have allowed myself to “dream” these past few days, as retirement is thrust upon me, willingly. I “wonder” at how I can make more “moments” and “pockets of time” with my dad. Yesterday, the four of us (Becky, Don, dad and I) golfed on a picture perfect day. It was guys vs the gals, with losers having to buy pizza for dinner. Guys came out ahead. We ate the pizza outside on their deck and then proceeded to play cards. Dad was so happy with the day – the beautiful weather, us all being together enjoying each others’ company.
I don’t think I ever allowed myself to consider that dad would still be alive and doing so well when retirement became a realistic option for me. I am feeling the powerful impact of this a little more each day.
I played tennis with my regular other three today – all of which are retired teachers. I broke the news to them and they were thrilled for me. The four of us will be competing at the Senior Olympics in Iowa in July. Luckily we are in different age brackets, so we will be able to cheer each other on and not have to worry about competing against each other.
