New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

Money has something to do with that intimate place in our heart where we need security, and we do not want to reveal our need or give away our security to someone who, maybe only accidentally, might betray us. Many voices around and within us warn us of the danger of dependence. We fear being dependent on others because of the idea that dependence is a threat to our security….

The pressure in our culture to secure our own future and to control our lives as much as possible does not find support in the Bible. Jesus knows our need for security. He is concerned that because security is such a deep human need, we do not misplace our trust in things or people that cannot offer us real security.

Today’s Question

Do you fear being dependent on others? Does that make it more difficult for you to truly depend on God? Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
—Matthew 6:19-21 (NRSV)

I am having problems with this and have reognized it within myself before this reflection and have tried to address my atitude. I have prayed for increased trust and faith in His care and love. I have seen signs of His care and how he is working all out for me, which have helped.
I had a successful day yesterday with my first frray into shopping by myself, but I am not looking forward to the winter. In case you do not understand my reticence, it is because I have very little use of my hands and next to no grip strength. In fact, per my lawyer’s instructions, my doctor wrote a letter that states that I have no use of my hands whatsoever.
Prayers for Ally and David, for health, both physical and mental and financial issues. Prayers for Jill as she continues to contend with issues with a colleague, may the new administrator prove a fruitful avenue for resolution. Prayers for Robert and his small church as they seek a new pastor and may God lead the laity in their mission to maintain the church’s services and studies. May God bless Marti and her staff. Thank you for your prayers andmay God bless all who visit here.

Brought up with long traditions of independence both in the “old country” and fortified in New England, the one place I can lean is on God. In the last 20+ years that has helped me through a variety of issues and sustains me now.
Surely hope that there will be help for Julie as the weather gets colder and shopping is needed.
I assume you went shopping along because Megan is now working.
I’ve had prayers and best wishes from many as I prepare to give a “message”. not a sermon. More work done on that today.
Have numbers in the number boards on the CV Brill car, am working now on the front end of the car body. Number 148, the last Brill car on the Central Vermont, is nearing completion.
Prayers for the future for the church I attend, Julie and Megan, Jill and Larry, the school where Jill teaches, David & Ally, Lou and her children. Thank You, Lord.

I am very independent, and do not worry about my dependence come older age. Maybe this is a bit foolish. I believe my mother worried enough for the both of us. My parents had long term health care insurance – and dad laments what an incredible waste it was. I guess I hope that my nephews or my god children will assist me when my health fails me.
I believe I am trusting God, depending on Him as I should. I pray the Spirit would nudge me if I am blind to something.
Grateful for this week to be over. Just seemed long and somewhat hectic. I have tennis this evening, hope to relax for a bit on the couch.
I spoke with Roger’s vet yesterday – as I was concerned with the amount of water he was taking in. But – she reassured me and I am settling in to the idea that his health struggles are behind him/us.
Storms and fall weather blowing in this evening. Tomorrow will be blustery – good day to stay inside.

I do fear losing my independence and not being able to take care of my responsibilities. Yes, these fears sometimes make it difficult to trust God fully. I ask God to help me with this. May God bless and keep our family here.
