New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

Maybe God doesn’t want to be protected from our impurities. Maybe God delights to inhabit our world unmediated—up close and personal, embodied.

—Ruth L. Boling, “Beyond Me: A Letter from Elizabeth,” in Season’s Greetings: Christmas Letters from Those Who Were There (Upper Room Books, 2024)

Today’s Scripture

Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she remained in seclusion. She said, “This is what the Lord has done for me in this time, when he looked favorably on me and took away the disgrace I have endured among my people.”
—Luke 1:24-25 (NRSVUE)

Prayer for the Week

Jesus, help me cast aside my reluctance, throw caution to the wind, and open the doorway of my heart to all the wonder of you, here and now. Amen. [prayer adapted from Season’s Greetings by Ruth L. Boling]

I’m moved, a feeling comes to me quickly and unexpectedly, sometimes there are several of these, but always only one at a time. They briefly, most often in church during choir practice,, stop me from what I’m doing. Thank You, Lord.

I don’t always recognize it in the moment. I have had some very moving moments – in some of the hardest situations, yet – it was a gift to be present to suffering, and be able to remain with the person(s). A few conversations end up being holy ground – and I have a hard time afterwards, recapturing the beauty of the moment and returning to normality. For me, I can often find beauty in melancholy. I look for the bittersweetness of liminal moments.
So so cold here – with very windy, blustery conditions. Many schools to the north are closed today – with lake effect snow heavily impacting the area. I’ve had a hard time staying warm all day.
