Today’s Reflection
Within Christian traditions, self-compassion has been underemphasized and sometimes outright subverted. While we laud the Christian mandate of loving our neighbor, some people regard self-love with suspicion. They believe delighting in ourselves to be an offense and tending to our needs before those of others to be outrageously sacrilegious. Still, Jesus invites us to love our neighbor as ourselves, not instead of ourselves. The care, goodwill, and delight we extend to ourselves should be the measure of that which we offer to others.

Today’s Scripture
Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
—Mark 12:29-31 (NRSVUE)
Prayer for the Week
Lord, open our eyes that we may see you in our brothers and sisters.
Lord, open our ears that we may hear the cries of the hungry, the cold, the frightened, the oppressed.
Lord, open our hearts that we may love each other as you love us.
Renew in us your spirit.
Lord, free us and make us one. Amen.

I agree with this reflection, but also think it is too easy to over do self compassion when we do for ourselves what we don’t do for our neighbor.
Thank You, Lord for the blessings of this day.
It is hard for me to be kind to myself. One way I can show myself compassion is to extend myself grace and to stand up for myself when needed. Take better care of my body
Jill, thank you so much for your prayers and words are f encouragement yesterday.
I need to extend forgiveness to myself before I can forgive another.
Compassion to appropriately ascertain when self care is needed. Not necessarily desired, but needed. Just like on an airplane, apply the oxygen mask to oneself before assisting another. I must be rooted, grounded and clear minded in order for me to be present and with another.
My dad had another good day on the golf course, coming in under his age for the second time this week. Don joined us and we dodged a few raindrops and got the round in.
A rainy weekend ahead – looking forward to watching golf and tennis and doing schoolwork prep.
