New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Words of Hope During COVID-19

Migdiel Perez, manager of The Upper Room Prayer Center, talks about how he has adapted his daily time with God while staying at home during the coronavirus pandemic.

Today’s Reflection

The devastating suffering of poverty causes God to weep. Sharing God’s grief means we act in whatever ways we can to bridge the gap between the rich and poor. In this way, we can embody Jesus’ good news for the poor.

Lent challenges us to examine how we relate to those who are impoverished. We can ask ourselves, Who do I know personally who suffers from poverty?, What can I learn from the poor?, and How is God calling me to help in efforts aimed at alleviating poverty? Questions like these lead us into greater faithfulness to God whose heart is always turned toward the poor.

—Trevor Hudson, Pauses for Lent: 40 Words for 40 Days (Upper Room Books, 2015)

Today’s Question

How are you creating daily life with God during these times of uncertainty and isolation? Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free.”

—Luke 4:18 (NRSV)

I certainly have a much lengthier time in the morning to sit in the quietness and usher in the new day. The simplicity this isolation has created is something I welcome, while it is such a 180 for others. Being independent, single and an introvert – I am built for this.
I am so encouraged hearing stories of families – re-connecting during this time of sheltering in. My friend and my god-children – they are getting much needed time together, meals together, board games together – such a 180 from their break neck speed/schedule of sports, school activities, church activities. All good, enjoyable, edifying things. But, this too, is good for them.
For whatever reason, dad did not want to go golfing yesterday – despite a gorgeous day. I am not sure what to think. So, when I got done with my online office hours, I met my friend for an afternoon walk.
I am finding my way a bit with all the incredible platforms on line and will begin building my lessons for next week.
Prayers of His peace for each one who pauses in this space today.

I continue my early morning quiet time, and use email, the internet to meet others and worship. Physically apart we are spiritually connected here at the UR, by email, and through ZOOM and Face Time. Grateful for technology that enables this. Thanks be to God.

I am continuing much as everyone else. I read many UR resources, connect with everyone on this comment board, and also I have been spending time in quiet with deeply breathing and focusing on God, His peace filling me and me having hope and faith.
Prayers for Jill and Larry. May Jill conquer technology and may Larry reengage with Jill.
Prayers for Robert and his willingly embracing technology, may I learn from his example.
Prayers for Andrea and April as they both find comfort, rest and restoration in nature.
Prayers for Lou and her children as they seek to reconnect and spend time together.
H is home today as well as this weekend. The tension is so high. He has to be watched constantly to take necessary precautions to keep Megan and I safe. I know when I am not watching he does not take precautions, so I am careful to have a barrier between my hand when I contact surfaces I am unsure if he has touched. I am very on edge as this only adds a new level of fear to the usual.
I pray everyone stays as safe as possible and may the Lord watch over all who come to this site bringing a shield of protection and breathing peace into their souls.
    Prayers and thank you UR

This is an especially important question now, one I will ponder more. When I receive my federal stimulus check, I intend to donate it to our local food shelf and domestic abuse shelter.

Prayers for Jill’s health, school technology and lessons for students, for Larry’s wellbeing, for Julie and Megan’s health and safety when h is in the household, for Robert and Erich’s wellbeing and relationship. Prayers for all UR friends, may you, may we, all stay healthy, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. May we handle anxiety by turning to the God in whom we put our trust. Blessings.

Oh Julie, I too pray that you would have hope. This is certainly a gift from our Heavenly Father….and if we ask, He will reply.
What a great idea Andrea for stimulus check! I know that I will be donating it, but I have not thought about where. Our world is certainly becoming smaller as so many countries experience the same disease. May we share not only medical information, but our Lord Jesus as we are the hands and feet of the church. I pray that Jill and her Dad will share time together as they continue to work through grief. It sounds like you are learning more about online teaching and connecting with your students, Jill…you will do well!! I am glad Robert is connecting with ZOOM so that you can attend Bible studies. I pray that Rick is safe as he works. Lou, I pray that you have someone that can listen to you as you listen to so many others. Went for a short walk today and am watching the duck couple every time we cross the bridge….no baby ducks yet. Spring, new life, circle of life, I thank you Lord for everything. Blessings dear UR family.
