Today’s Reflection
Unlock the doors of fear and doubt.
Let your faith spill into the streets!
Jesus is risen!
Death has no more claims on your life.
In life, in death, in life after death, Christ is your life.
Peace be with you.
—Safiyah Fosua, “Open the Door,” in The Africana Worship Book (Year C), edited by Valerie Bridgeman Davis and Safiyah Fosua (Discipleship Resources, 2008)

Today’s Scripture
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
—John 20:19 (NIV)
Prayer for the Week
Almighty God, speak to us today as you spoke to those who went before us. Tell us the stories of Your wonders and greatness. We are ready to hear them. Remind us once again of your grace and love. Help us teach your goodness to our children and the next generation. Amen. [prayer adapted from “Worship Resources for Juneteenth Day Celebrations” in The Africana Worship Book (Year C)]

Pleasantly surprised after perhaps some trepidation. Unsure at first, maybe some shock. Relieved when they realized Jesus actually rose from the dead, was ALIVE. Still not sure what would happen next. Thank God, Christ is risen, risen indeed!
Trepidation, fear and awe as well as incredulousity and finally acceptance and a feeling of what a holy and immense moment they were witnessing. A feeling of being truly blessed.
We do not ask for what useful purpose the birds do sing, for song is their pleasure since they were created for singing. Similarly, we ought not to ask why the human mind troubles to fathom the secrets of heaven….
