New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

By filling my days with so much structure, I hadn’t left the Holy Spirit any room to set the agenda. There was no space for unexpected ministry opportunities. There was no space for downtime, creativity, experimentation, or play. I’d developed a bad habit of stuffing my life full of things to do, and not leaving enough time to just be.

—Greg Pimlott, Pastoral Pause: A Practical Guide to Renewal Leave (Upper Room Books, 2024)

Today’s Question

What happens when you have space “to just be” and let God set the agenda? Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

Save me, O God,
for the waters have come up to my neck.
I sink in deep mire,
where there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters,
and the flood sweeps over me.
—Psalm 69:1-2 (NRSVUE)

Prayer for the Week

Dear God, give me the courage to push aside my tasks and to-do lists so that I can rest in your presence. Embolden me to leave time unscheduled and to relax into that blank space of possibility. I want to be led by your Holy Spirit. Amen.
Submit your prayer to The Upper Room.

Making space to “just be” is a task we have before everything else we do. God comes first. As humans we are easily distracted , often by very unimportant things. I’m as guilty of that as anyone.
It’s a struggle. When God comes first, good things happen. Thank You, Lord.

This week’s reflections have given me a needed reminder to be still before God and listen for his guidance. I thank God for this nudge and pray for renewed determination to follow the call.

When you leave time to just be you get to remember that you are a person, a gift from God that needs to be recognized and nurtured. You will feel more relaxed. You sleep better You begin to have creative ideas and renewed interests. You have time to just be quiet, hear your own heart beat while you feel God’s presence, and know that experience is prayer.
