Enough
Today's Reflection
A religious scholar who had been listening to Jesus asks a deep and simple question (the deepest insights often come from the simplest of questions): What is the greatest commandment? Jesus, recognizing the sincerity of the scholar, removes the legalism of all the law and commandments. . . . In a few sentences, legalism becomes relational, and love becomes both the behavior and measurement: Love the Lord your God with everything you have, and love your neighbor (all those God places in your path) as yourself. It was enough for the religious scholar, and it is enough for us. Love.

Today's Reflection
In this moment God is involved in the minutiae of human experience: God is loving people and influencing the evil toward goodness. God is protecting aliens and strangers. God is taking the sides of orphans and widows and is squashing the wicked exploiters.

Today's Reflection
We wear upon ourselves, like blankets, the testimonies of those who have walked ahead of us. Their names and deeds, woven tightly, become our encouragement and adornment to be given away to listening ears. They are the Lord’s, and they lead the way for us up the hill of the Lord.

Today's Reflection
The faithful character of God in history is almost without tense, being present/active in the past and present, continually into the future, doing always what God has committed God’s character to do. The wronged are being defended, prisoners are being freed, and the hungry are being fed. The blind are at this moment receiving sight, and those who have been forced into subservience are being lifted up. The character/actions of God that we have witnessed in the past are reflected in the character/actions of God now as well as in the hoped-for future we look toward when our reality contrasts with this vision of justice.
—Ray Buckley, “Where We Bury Our Umbilical Cord,” in The Upper Room Disciplines 2024 (Upper Room Books)
Today's Question
When have you witnessed God at work in the world in a way that gave you hope about an otherwise seemingly hopeless situation? [question by Ray Buckley in Disciplines 2024] Join the conversation.
Today's Scripture
God always keeps his word.
He gives justice to the poor and food to the hungry.
The Lord sets prisoners free and heals blind eyes.

Today's Reflection
We are preparing to move. For my part, there are boxes of books in several languages, each one feeling like an old friend. I have not seen some in many years, and when I do, there is a sense of celebration. Carefully, though, I am giving them away. . . . As my older brother reminds me, “Pass the books along. There will be others written. These will stay in your memory.” Our experiences — what we value, what we trust — will stay with us throughout our life.
—Ray Buckley, “Where We Bury Our Umbilical Cord,” in The Upper Room Disciplines 2024 (Upper Room Books, 2023)

Today's Reflection
Home, like family, actually has very little to do with the people or places of our birth. Even the words home or family can bring fear to the many people who live their lives without knowing either. Our collective testimonies seem to say that homes and families are intentional creations, and we are drawn to seek and create them for ourselves and others.
When we say we have “found a home,” we are often speaking of the place and people where our worth is affirmed by love.
