New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

When individuals commit to membership in my denomination, the United Methodist Church, they make a vow “to faithfully participate in its ministries by their prayers, their presence, their gifts, their service and their witness.” Other denominations make similar membership vows. …What effects does the church experience if members do not actively participate in the ministries of the church with their prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness?

The spiritual gift I used last year with my small group was facilitating and generating discussion through questioning. It is a gift, and not everyone has it. Maybe about ten years ago, I had a student teacher, who was part of a program of engineers leaving that field to teach. This woman was brilliant mathematically. But she had sat in a cubicle for most of her professional career, with minimum team activities and interaction. Her heart was in the right place, she so desired to work with students. But, she could not question them and draw them into learning. And I was unable to help her…she didn’t possess the “gift”. She could observe me, but she was unable to mimic me. It was at that point that I realized how significant my “gift” was. It came naturally, it wasn’t something I could plan for. Grateful to be using God’s gift to me.
The last few days have been quite busy. Yesterday was golf with dad, Don and Becky. Then lunch and cards afterwards. And on the way home I stopped by a tennis match between my long time club and my new team from last year. Pretty much my four favorite tennis players were competing against each other on the same court. And, surprisingly, my old team pulled off the upset. But overall, the team from my new club won the match, and remained tied for first place.
New air conditioner is being installed today. When I was clearing the area by my furnace this morning – I noticed water on the floor coming from my hot water heater. I am going to have to give some attention to this next. Good grief.

I just took a spiritual gift inventory test. It said my gifts are in administration, discernment and teaching. The gift of administration resonates with me as my last job as a nuclear engineer was being the coordinator of a group comprised of high ranking plant and industry officials as well as high powered consultants. Before I took the job the committee members had an adverserial relationship with the plant. The tone of the committee completely changed when I took over. There was a sense of cooperation and mutual respect. I hated leaving that job because I enjoyed helping the plant put its best effort forward.
I have been asked by a committee chairwoman to succeed. her and I have decided to accept the challenge. It too is mainly administrative in nature as I will be coordinating the celebrations at the church.

I think I have the gift of teaching. I love leading Bible study or kids in a devotion. Teaching life skills classes is what I did in mental health. I have the gift of music. I enjoy singing on the church choir and helping with chidlren’s choir. I especially love doing musical activities with persons with special needs. That is my great joy. I started my job today. Orientation will be all next week, except for Monday, which is a holiday. Juneteenth. I’m not giving up my home business. Will try to work it on my off days.

What wonderful responses from NEM. Thank you! Currently I’m on the worship team, planning, leading worship, enabling Communion, arranging the sanctuary for worship. Also on SPRC helping our lay supply pastor in training. Our church is very small so all of us are asked to attend all committee meetings and give input.
Thankfully the stove has been installed. It was a 2.5 hour job worked with the plumber and all went well.
The new stove has been used and is much appreciated. Next to the old stove to the transfer station.
A very nice walk in the woods yesterday. Have been dodging the frequent rain showers.
Father’s Day picnic-dinner at church tomorrow.
Prayers for patience and peace as our country has activities of an unprecedented nature. May all of the proceedings be open, transparent, and fair following the rule of law. May God’s wisdom be invoked.
    Thank You, Lord.
