New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

The spiritual journey is essentially different from engaging in hero worship or joining a therapeutic movement. These forms of following are typically centered on “me.” In hero worship, we may be looking for a vicarious self by losing our identity in that of the hero. In many therapeutic movements, we may be searching for inner harmony or healing. When Jesus says, “Follow me,” he is calling us to let go of “me” and to gradually say, “You, Lord, are the one.”

—Henri J. M. Nouwen, A Spirituality of Homecoming, edited by John S. Mogabgab (Upper Room Books, 2012)

Today’s Question

How can you let go and surrender to Jesus today? What helps you remember the spiritual journey is about more than just personal growth? Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
—Matthew 16:24 (NIV)

Today’s reflection comes from someone with far more understanding than me. It’s a challenge for me to grasp the message and answer the question.Lord, grant me Your wisdom to understand. Thank You, Lord, for Your ever presence. In these very troubling times in America, we most certainly need You.

I echo Robert’s prayer for our country. We need the Lord during these troubling times and I pray that our democracy can withstand the onslaught.
I do not agree with the author regarding therapy,I believe it not only heals us but our relationships with and understanding of other people, including the Lord.

As I go through each day, I always try to remember that it’s a God/Jesus. It’s not about me, but about everyone and everything. The spiritual journey, while spending time in prayer, etc. is important, the spiritual journey is about mission, going out into the world, being Christ, proclaiming and being his radical love. As I have said before in some of my posts, it comes down to action. Jesus was all about action everywhere he went while making time to recharge his batteries in prayer and being in the presence of our loving Father/Mother.
