New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

Jesus lives a Spirit-led life, even in a culture trying to forbid him from performing acts of justice on the sabbath. He puts the over-planners on notice—the productive, wealthy, powerful, self-righteous, hoarders, ignorers, and worriers. He consistently calls us to the kind of action that isn’t measured in qualitative data: love, justice, service, and awareness.

Today’s Scripture

Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your ailment.”
—Luke 13:10-12 (NRSV)

Prayer for the Week

O God, our Creator and Redeemer, help me to realize my need for sabbath time in my busy life. Please give me a hunger for sabbath time so I can spend more time with you, my family, and my faith community. Amen.

These past several days, I was given a glimpse into my own entitlement. I can hardly stomach it when I see it in some of the students in the halls at school. But, there it was, in its grand ugliness, looking back at me in the mirror. And, also was given another look at my expectations of other people. So, I guess you can say I have been in the woodshed a bit…and it is good. He keeps working on me, and oh, how I need it. Thank You Father – for Your forgiveness and the mighty working of Your Spirit in me.
Walked into school today with a colleague I don’t often see. She commented on the beautiful weather and asked me if I would like to join her on a walk during our common lunch time. So – that should be nice. After school, I am hitting some tennis balls with a colleague. At courts very near to the school.
Seems like my air conditioner isn’t quite putting out the coolest air. I figured it would be a week + before someone could come out. But, I called this morning and someone is available Thursday when I get home from school. I have had the unit 24 years, with no upkeep. Now, I did get a new furnace about 3-4 years back…and the unit was looked at then. So, even if it is a bit pricey – I have had a good run with this one. The air is coolish, but not like usual.

I feel led by God to use my new business to bless others, to sow seeds as folks have done with me. I also feel that God has led David and me to sow seeds in our faith community: , to give our time and resources as we can to the ministries of our church. God has led us to be a light of love and to extend grace to our church and our community. Lord, help us to be obedient. We spent a quiet Memorial Day. I reflected on the sacrifices made by those who served their country and gave their lives. I thought of my grandfather and great-uncle, who saw fellow Doughboys die in the trenches in France i WW1, my cousin’s husband who died on the beaches at Normandy on D-Day, my daddy’s stories of the Army nurses he encountered when he was in the Army: women who were imprisoned in internment camps in the Philippines and saw fellow nurses die from torture, disease, and starvation, during WW2. David pondered his time in the Air Force during Vietnam era and his buddies who went to Vietnam and didn’t come home. I also thought of my GGGFs who died in federal prison camps during the Civil War. Also my GGGF who fought for the Union and didn’t come home. We don’t know what happened to him. May God grant all lost eternal rest.
