New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

Note: This week’s New Every Morning reflections are structured differently to follow the format of our featured title, Rally: Communal Prayers for Lovers of Jesus and Justice, which addresses issues of social justice through reflection and over 50 call-and-response prayers known as litanies.

No one believes me when I say I like my body. To deeply enjoy embodied experiences is a radical act—one modeled by a God who chose incarnation. That we have a God who lived inside a woman’s body, washed the feet of his disciples, sat down to meals with strangers, and asked that the sick and suffering be brought to him only affirms bodies as a source of divine inspiration and wisdom. Yet so often our bodies are shamed and blamed, dismissed and ignored. While this litany isn’t in response to an acute crisis—there may not be a Sunday morning when the dire news of the week demands these words—we cannot overlook the larger need for lament of disembodiment.

—Stephanie Vos with Britney Winn Lee, Rally: Communal Prayers for Lovers of Jesus and Justice (Fresh Air Books, 2020)

Today’s Question

What kindness can you offer to your body today? Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

Don’t you know that you are God’s temple and God’s Spirit lives in you?
—1 Corinthians 3:16 (CEB)

Today’s Litany

ONE: When we abandon our bodies to be absorbed in our screens,
ALL: We return by our breath. (inhale, exhale)
ONE: When our bodies are overwhelmed with fear and anxiety,
ALL: We take care with our breath. (inhale, exhale)
ONE: When our bodies fail and disappoint,
ALL: We stay close to our breath. (inhale, exhale)
ONE: When our bodies cause harm and suffering to others,
ALL: We come back to our center with our soft breath. (inhale, exhale)
ONE: When our bodies are harmed and violated,
ALL: We take refuge in the calm of the breath. (inhale, exhale)
Submit your prayer to The Upper Room.

Something More

The final litany from Rally was written by Britney Winn Lee in the beginning days of the global pandemic. This prayer reminds us that hope endures; goodness prevails; people surprise us; and love cannot, has not, will not fail. Watch and listen.

Went for a walk, very good for me in many ways.
Preparing for communion tomorrow. Some will do it tail-gate style in the parking lot, but I’m home and will take communion via ZOOM. This will be my second time this way. Thankful communion is possible despite the pandemic. Much cooler weather in the forecast for this coming week.High in the 70s, lows in the upper 50s. Cloudy and a slight mist. We could use some rain.Hoping for successful lipoma removal from my son’s back. Waiting for a reply from a dermatologist office. Prayers fir every aspect of the pandemic, the economy, education, jobless and homeless, and the upcoming election. God is able to help us through all of this. Thank You, Lord

Had to use a secondary method to post this morning, the regular link gave a 404 message.

I have so enjoyed the devotionals this week and especially the litany…..I feel so connected to everyone when we all repeat the same words and breathe. Thank you UR for this week and I look forward to the next…there are so many ways to praise God!!
I have been outside every morning for several hours in the yard. Finally I feel that it is looking better, but I have more to do. Meeting more people and stopping to listen to them has been a change for me in that I now enjoy this interruption instead of dreading the thought of wasting my time by listening….oh I am so selfish at times, but I am teachable, so let me be open to more teaching Lord, everyday and in every way.
Blessings dear UR Family as we start the weekend. To be hot here, but I am up early and will be glad to be in our AC home later today. I will be breathing with you all day long.

I had the same Error message as you Robert and had to find another means of finding my frellow posters. I also spent the morning exercising my body. I would add feeding and petting my kitty is kind to his and my own body. My heart is gladdened by caring for another and when I pet him my heart is soothed.
Megan and I had a busy day yesterday, up early (which is my usual time) to get our hair cut then errands and in late afternoon we took Tazzie to the vet for his annual checkup. So far a clean bill of health but bllod work results today. The salon we go to for our hair is owned by a Christian man and he runs his entire enterprise in accordance with Psalm 90:17.
Prayers for Robert and Eric, may the dermatologist’s call come soon. May they receive a good report.
Prayers for April and her learning more and more from God each day.
I spoke with Marcy and she is suffering from a migraine. I am praying and ask that you join me.
Prayers, thank you and stay safe dear UR
