New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

Mary’s anointing of Jesus is a saving mystery. Its over-the-top gesture is perfectly aligned to announce the extravagance of God’s love and forgiveness. The mystery empowers and examines my response to God’s love. It invites me to examine my witness. Am I announcing God’s presence with extravagant gestures? Or am I acting from a scarcity mindset? Am I filling spaces with the fragrance of Christ? Or am I leading an antiseptic life that makes little impression?

—Edgardo Colón-Emeric, “For Us and for Our Salvation,” in Disciplines 2025 (Upper Room Books, 2024)

Today’s Question

Can you think of a time when God’s presence overwhelmed you? How did you share this experience with others? [question from Edgardo Colón-Emeric in Disciplines 2025] Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
—John 12:3 (NIV)

I can’t say that I have experienced this…being overwhelmed by His presence. I can certainly get emotional during certain songs…not sure I am “overwhelmed”…maybe overcome?? Speaking of which – music today at church was moving. I so enjoy what the worship teams leads us in. There was a guest pastor from Alabama – and he gave a very stirring sermon.
Cancer support group was very good…people, their courageous stories, the shared support.
Watching some football, prepping food for the week, doing school tasks. Gearing up for the first 5 day week of the school year. Tennis is starting up – so my evenings will be busy – but busy with good things.

I consider myself very fortunate to experience this twice. While God is with us always, I think God has the ability to make as more aware of His presence. Twice I was just speechless, motionless, and felt so different from any other experiences in my life. I believe it happened twice to reassure me that it was real. I was very humbled by this and its memory is a rock to my faith. Thank You, Lord.

Much later than usual, I’ve been on a trip to the area where I grew up and had many very meaningful experiences. For the first time in my life I know the exact building where I was born .gtraveled through the notch where I snowshoed long ago. I visited the grave of my German language teacher, saw the trees I planted around the border of the property where I lived going to high school, and the very swampy site of the pond I skated on. The house we built is gone, but a newer, larger house and another building are there now. It was a moving couple of days. Thank You, Lord.

Made it back to NH in time for homecoming Sunday, a wonderful service with lots of music.
The project to make elderberry jelly is underway.

Jill begins her 32nd year teaching. I’m very aware of the routine that starts the year. Hope it goes well and there’s fun playing tennis. Peace, safety, and success. Thank You, Lord.
