New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

When I began interacting with scripture through writing, a new relationship unfolded. I copied scripture word for word, questioning it, prodding the text to uncover what had not been said, speaking back to it about what I found confusing, too good to be true, too hard, too easy, and sometimes trying to rewrite it with details from contemporary life. In this way, I entered into a relationship with scripture. Faith and the Spirit — both mysterious — sustained me through early adulthood, reason opened the door to the Bible, and now imagination exercised through creative writing forged a living relationship to the Bible.

Today’s Scripture

We also constantly give thanks to God for this, that when you received the word of God that you heard from us you accepted it not as a human word but as what it really is, God’s word, which is also at work in you believers.
—1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NRSVUE)

Prayer for the Week

I read scripture almost every day. It is sustaining, uplifting, educational, and faith building. I don’t write back or use it in my prayers, the most journaling I’ve done is right here responding to the day’s reflection.
Had a safe trip to Rhinebeck NY to visit Jenny, Chris, Willa, and Oona. Will go to the Dutchess County Fair this week. It’s a long drive from Conway NH. Thank You, Lord, for a safe trip.

I like to read the scriptures in the lectionary by using this site. I do not write back. I do sometimes talk to God about what seems believable, understandable and what does not. I often imagine the feelings of the people in the scripture and try to relate them to situations in my everyday 21st century life. I do like to search for the image of God that are behind the written word.
