New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

It is imperative that the institutional church that is collapsing beneath bureaucratic top heaviness, clergy-centric practice, and ecclesiastic loss of soul live forward into the original vision of Jesus. Indeed, the gospel-shaped church is the only kind that will birth Jesus-followers in the years ahead. What I see emerging in myriad ways and places is precisely that — a gospel-shaped movement.

Today’s Scripture

The church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. God strengthened the church, and its life was marked by reverence for the Lord. Encouraged by the Holy Spirit, the church continued to grow in numbers.
—Acts 9:31 (CEB)

Prayer for the Week

Holy God, thank you for the many expressions of church that are available to us today. Help us remember that we are your beloved children. Guide us to love one another and to remain faithful to you through prayer and other spiritual practices. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Conferences are fading away or being joined to others, there are fewer churches, issues are splitting denominations and there are fewer people in church, supporting church, young people have vanished. I don’t understand the term “gospel led”. Isn’t the gospel the message we follow and proclaim? If it means more lay led, I certainly understand that. CCUMC was lay led for a time between pastors. It wouldn’t exist if that hadn’t happened.. Thank You, Lord for the Holy Spirit.
May we be empowered, taught, and guided by the Holy Spirit and carry on.

Several young families have recently joined our church. I lament the split in the Methodist church. But we carry on by serving our members and our community. I believe churches need to adapt to the changes in society while adhering to the core principles found in the gospels.

I have noticed a lot of changes in worship styles. Our annual conference has been strongly impacted by disaffiliations. In our county, every single UMC disaffed. A lot of manipulation went on to get churches to break away. I admit to finding little good news it this. But the churches who stayed have hope. When there is hope, there is potential for a gospel movement. Lord, help me to focus and to look for the beautiful. Let us be guided by your Holy Spirit.
