Today’s Reflection
Many people live a clean, upright Christian life, following the rules, never missing church, and believing that they are blessed because of appropriate behavior. . . . Then some event or experience shatters their worldview: a death in the family, a divorce, being fired, getting sick, experiencing clinical depression, having a child that makes destructive choices, falling in love with someone outside of the faith, coming out about sexuality, or some other cataclysm.
In the middle of the chaos, these “good” and richly blessed people often realize the complete inadequacy of their former vision of God, themselves, their church, and their world. . . . Compassion and solidarity with others who suffer in the same way they suffer comes to the fore, even if the others are not the “right” religion or have made poor moral choices. As the illusion of control over their own lives falls away, they open to the mystery of a God who is more present, more merciful, and more vulnerable than they ever imagined.

When I reflect back on my entire life my view of God as my heavenly father who protects, guides and provides for me is stretched and strengthened.
Fall seven times. Stand up eight.
Japanese proverb
God has used many things to broaden my view of who God is. Seeing God work in situations that seemed hopeless and in people many Christians believe are outside God’s grace, has shown me that God’s love is bigger than I ever thought possible. I am no longer afraid to ask God the hard questions, because I realized God is big and loving enough to handle my anger, my doubt, my confusion. God meets us where we are, knows our names, and wants to have an ever deepening relationship with us. On the days I doubt, I try to choose Christ anyway.
It isn’t that I don’t ever feel far away from God, or hopelessness at the chaos the world is in right now. Sometimes I despair. Thank You Lord, for being the order and strength we can count on in the midst of chaos.
