Today’s Reflection
Years ago, I traveled with two people from my church to Willow Creek Community Church near Chicago to attend a small-group conference. We intentionally arrived a day early so we could attend their mid-week Believers Bible Service. We seriously underestimated the Chicago traffic. As we were driving to Willow Creek, we realized we would not have time to stop at the hotel and change clothes. We had been traveling all day, and we were all dressed in jeans. I was mortified at the thought of attending a worship service in jeans, especially at a church I had never attended. As we drove, we debated: Should we skip it? Should we stop and change and arrive late? Or should we just go in jeans?
After thoroughly considering all the options, we finally decided to go in jeans. It sounds quaint now that we would even think twice or consider skipping worship because we were dressed in jeans. I’ve come to realize that what I wear to worship God is not important to God. It took me many years to give up my—and many others’—tradition of dressing up to go to church.

I’d say that there’s a general casual look at my church. The dress up for church days of my youth, 50s-60s, is gone. Jeans and shorts are seen. It’s a bit more come as you are. Attendance is more important than what you wear!!
Thinking of Jill watching the tennis matches with Serena and Venus. Can’t play at that level for ever. Glad to see they both have days some moves and are greatly appreciated. Golf is easier on your body , that’s good to know.
Cool in the 40s this morning, fall is coming. My son put his AC away.
Communion Sunday with a guest pastor
Prayers for Pakistan, Ukraine, Yemen, Afghanistan, Tigray and anywhere there’s conflict, war, violence. Prayers for healing, restoration, caregiving and receiving. .Thank You, Lord,
The dress code at church is wear what you want. Some dress up and others wear jeans and shorts. Again it is more important to worship, even in rags, than to not.
The woman from the Area Office of Aging called Megan yesterday at work. Megan related that it was obvious that the woman thought the scammers are abhorrent and continue to pose a threat.
Prayers for Ally and David, for improvement in their health and finances and mood. Prayers for Jill and her friends, may they all support one another. Prayers for Lou and her mother and brother for recovery and caregiving resources. Prayers for Robert and his church, may God help them succeed and grow.
I’m not sure where to go with this directive. A thought that came to mind was how often (or in-often) we have Communion. In the church where I was raised, we only had it once every 3 months. At that time – in my naivete and immaturity – I thought that made it more sacred. At my current home church, it seems to be irregular since Covid. At the church which I am attending early on Sunday mornings – it is every week. I feel like just the right of amount of focus and time is given to it at the end of the service. It seems holy and significant, even when it is every week.
Yes, dress has gotten much more casual. I am simply not comfortable going to Sunday morning worship in jeans. That probably just speaks to my age.
Well, the ball got dropped with the company I called yesterday morning. When I called them after school, there was no note of my address or need for service. I called another company – and they were out within two hours and my problem was resolved by 7 pm last night. Super grateful for that.
Feeling tired here at the end of the week. I met my friend to walk after school – we walked for an hour, but not at a rapid pace. The trail was mostly shaded. She is beginning a new job on Tuesday. When we were done walking, I asked her if I could pray for her. She also prayed.
I lazily picked up carryout on the way home and have been watching tennis. I taped it during the day and didn’t check in on the scores. It has been a relaxing evening. Trying to get a couple more weeks out of my flowers – so I just got in from watering them.
