New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

[Praying the Jesus Prayer] itself is simple: Repeat silently again and again the phrase “Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me.”

What do we do with the distractions? What do we do when our mind wanders? … We just go back to repeating the prayer. …

The important thing is to keep trying. Go back to the prayer; use times of solitude, such as time in the car, given to you in your schedule.

—Daniel Wolpert, Creating a Life with God: The Call of Ancient Prayer Practices (Upper Room Books. 2003)

Today’s Question

Today’s Scripture

As Jesus was leaving Jericho, together with his disciples and a sizable crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, Timaeus’ son, was sitting beside the road. When he heard that Jesus of Nazareth was there, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, show me mercy!”
—Mark 10:46b-47 (CEB)

Prayer for the Week

Our Father* in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
*Use whatever name for God you prefer, such as Creator, Sustainer, etc.
Submit your prayer to The Upper Room.

Have not prayed like that before. Usually my prayers are talking to God. Have heard Buddhist monks repeat the same words again and again. Everyone has their tradition.
Lots of information about Wesley in both the Lay Servant and Wesley book that is new to me. Very thankful for broader insight.
Foggy and warmer, temps in the 60s and 50s. Tomorrow back to lows in the 30s.
Concerns about rising Covid, flu, and RSV. Thankful to be vaccinated.
Leaves coming down with the rain.
Thank You, Lord for the blessings of the day.

I have never tried this though I do recite the entire serenity prayer each day.
Prayers for Ally and David and Lewis, may all have health improvements. Prayers for Jill and her family. Prayers for Lou and her mother as they mourn her brother, may God comfort them. Prayers for Robert and his church as they struggle to find their way amidst the changes brought to their services by the lay people attending certification training.

I would lose focus by repeating the same thing over and over. If my feelings and desires to express to Him bear repeating – with intentionality – than yes. But, for me, I think this practice would allow my mind to run free.
A good day at school, with much accomplished. Grades were due at the end of the day – and I finished up a few make up assignments by lunch.
A gray, dreary day here. The sun tried to peek out momentarily, but looks rather dreary again. Small group tonight. Still need to knock out 2 more letters of recommendation – maybe this evening, because too wet to walk.
Spoke with dad this morning – he is enjoying so many activities, that he is having a hard time fitting in everything he wants to do. This is a problem I will always welcome for my dad. His voice is continually excited.

I am quite comfortable with. This kind of prayer and often employ it. I think there is a book on praying the Jesus Prayer.
