Today’s Reflection
Scripture is iconographic. One of the interesting features of some icons is that the farther you look into the picture, the larger things become rather than smaller. The next time you see an icon that has scenery, look closely. Look at the windows, for instance. There may be one relatively small window at the forefront of the icon. Another window, obviously in the background, is much larger than the one in the foreground. Or look at the buildings. The buildings tend to get bigger in the back rather than smaller, as we would expect. Do you see what this does? It totally reverses our normal artistic perspective in which the picture recedes to a vanishing point.

Today’s Scripture
God’s word is living, active, and sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates to the point that it separates the soul from the spirit and the joints from the marrow. It’s able to judge the heart’s thoughts and intentions.
—Hebrews 4:12 (CEB)
Prayer for the Week
Help us, O God, to let you do whatever you want to do in our lives. Help us to say yes to you at the center of our being. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. [prayer from Shaped by the Word by M. Robert Mulholland Jr.]

Not sure about broader, but certainly a new view. In the story of the talents given to servants, I now think Jesus is the servant who buried the talent, He wouldn’t participate in plan to reap where it had not been sown, making money isn’t everything. The context of that story is Holy Week. The takent is buried but rises from the ground.
Headed home today, made two kinds of jelly with my granddaughters, strawberry and mixed berry
(strawberry, blueberry, raspberry) Planned for apple/cranberry, but ran out of time.
When I have been involved in small group Bible study – this is where I have experienced a broader take on Scripture and God. Hearing how others interpret…maybe not the correct word…but how the Word speaks into their circumstances and lives…this was very eye opening to me initially. And I see how I miss this now. I know that co-facilitating the grief group is meaningful…to others and myself…but I recognize what I am missing in not being in a small group.
Looking forward to beginning my Advent devotional.
It was a very cold day yesterday to do TopGolf. There were heaters, but the wind was still felt. I remember anew why I had to give up skiing – my extremities simply cannot tolerate the cold.
It has been a lovely four days with no thought of school. I have work to do this afternoon – preparing for the final three weeks until winter break. Sometimes it is 4 weeks, sometimes 3. The school calendar this year has semester exams falling after winter winter break – a change from the past several years.
