New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

One Sunday an eighth grader accidentally pointed out that God had not called me to “do” youth ministry. In the first edition of this book, I told the story of thirteen-year-old Michelle who, week in and week out, asked me for prayer requests that she could lift up on my behalf. I was accustomed to asking teenagers, “How shall I pray for you this week?” but Michelle turned the tables and remained relentlessly faithful to her mission. Somehow, Michelle had gotten the message that she had a flock to tend as well, and her flock included me.

It dawned on me that what Michelle had responded to, out of our array of youth activities, was the simple question of a pastor, not an elaborate program of a youth leader. So I began to try pastoring youth instead of “doing” youth ministry—a shift in my self-understanding that proved to be as disorienting as it was freeing.

Prayer for the Week

I am no longer my own, but thine.

Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt.

Put me to doing, put me to suffering.

Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee,
exalted for thee or brought low by thee.

Let me be full, let me be empty.

Let me have all things, let me have nothing.

I freely and heartily yield all things
to thy pleasure and disposal.

And now, O glorious and blessed God,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it.

And the covenant which I have made on earth,
let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.

I know there is much to be gained and learned from our youth, and not just computer skills. Also, the youth have much to give if we just open our eyes and our hearts and receive what they offer. They see through a different perspective than we do and this allows them to view situations uniquely.
Much house cleaning to do today and hopefully, if time, picking up completed tax papers from the accountant. I’ve been dealing with my nephrologist’s office since I had the bloodwork done. I have low sodium which I have had probably all my life, it’s normal for me. But for some reason this doctor’s office won’t accept that, even after my PCP called them to tell them it is normal. I see other doctors who also look at my bloodwork and not a one bothers me about this. The nephrologist’s office always insists I need to go to the hospital and be put in the ICU! This time they even acknowledged that there was a note in my chart that my PCP called and told them this is normal for me. They retorted that it is not normal. UGH!

When I was a youth minister, I felt that the focus should be on discipling the students in my charge: to be a person whom they could trust, come to when they needed someone to talk to, and work together to be the presence of Christ, to help others, to learn and grow together. God blessed these efforts, it seemed. Unfortunately, to people of influence in the churches where I served, the role of a youth minister is marketing: lots of dynamic programming to increase numbers. It all seemed shallow and superficial. That part I was not so good at. I got frustrated and burned out. In a way, it was for the best, asGod led me in different directions.
Young people who are encouraged to take ownership of a youth ministry, to see that we are all ministers, including them, will take those lessons into adulthood. I hope they would be kinder to each other and learn to put on love.

Youth can be ministers by being diligent in their commitment to Kingdom work. Looking at Christ as their example and trying to live out “What Would Jesus Do”. I agree, Ally – the dynamic programming – the WOW factor, it can be so shallow. Is it about increasing numbers, or is it about increasing depth of relationship and intentional acts of caring, mercy and compassion.
Teacher meetings today and I was fortunate enough to be “on-site” in the morning, so had the afternoon to work in my classroom as I pleased. Many of my colleagues had training elsewhere in the morning and then had to report to our building for the activities I completed in the morning. Got all my “have to”s completed for next week – so a more relaxed weekend ahead.
A colleague and I are taking in “RiverDance” tomorrow. I so enjoy this show or ones like it. I can watch synchronized dancing forever. We will grab dinner after the matinee performance.
My god son’s team lost a heartbreaker last night, by one point. They had the lead until the last 10 seconds and then were unable to get a shot off. Lots of tears. My friend and I met up for dinner at a little hole in the wall bar near the site of the game. We had the place mostly to ourselves in the eating area and enjoyed the time together. The food was delicious. Love finding those little out of the way nugget eateries.
Glad to be home a bit early from school and in for the night. The weather is nasty – very damp and windy. I notice a bit of dampness in my basement. I hooked up the dehumidifier and am hopeful this will help.

There is much to learn from youth in all aspects of lifeThey are not empty receptacles waiting to be filled. Listening to them, their ideas, how they understand all. aspects of life is essential..Hopefully a level of understanding will come to all Julie’s doctors concerning her salt level.I think a love of River Dance fits someone with mathematical aptitude. I appreciate their skills and am a great fan of folk dance troupes.
Our bishop speaks tomorrow via Zoom. Expecting a big snow storm. Today was warm and a lot of snow disappeared.. Replacement computer expected Monday. Thankful for the blessings of the day.
