New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

The pain that moves us is nestled within social conditions that perpetuate it. People ravaged by hunger, discrimination, violence, and disease live within a web of social complexities. Their affliction is rooted in and aggravated by power inequities, cultural prejudices, unjust economic systems, inattentive institutional policies, and oppressive political powers. And suffering will continue as long as the social structures that sustain it remain unchecked and untransformed. Compassionate action, therefore, can take the form of public advocacy, political lobbying, education, reform campaigns, nonviolent resistance, and civil disobedience. Compassion seeks justice.

—Frank Rogers Jr., Practicing Compassion (Upper Room Books, 2015)

Today’s Question

How does compassion motivate you to seek justice? Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

Therefore the LORD waits to be gracious to you;
therefore he will rise up to show mercy to you.
For the LORD is a God of justice;
blessed are all those who wait for him.

—Isaiah 30:18 (NRSV)

Prayer for the Week

Lord, open my eyes so that I may see who around me needs compassion.

    I would say that I am not a deliberate justice seeker. Surely within the walls of my classroom – I seek for equality, respect and being seen-ness for each student. But – I am not one to be out in public, marching, holding a sign, etc. My school is very diverse – and I strive to make sure that each student in my classroom has a voice. Some choose not to use it, and I try to respect that as well.
    Yesterday was a celebration of life service for my dad’s cousin and his wife. She passed during Covid in Las Vegas. He moved back here late in 2021 – and passed this past December. It was a really nice gathering. I got to spend some time with cousins I rarely get to see, but with whom I share fond childhood memories – especially of Christmas Eves.
    I began doing some schoolwork yesterday. I even managed to tackle a tech issue successfully. I can’t believe it is July already. I went through all of June without doing a darned thing for school. I must use my July wisely.
    Julie – I continue to pray for endurance for you as you caregive.

    I have been looking at churches who practice hospitality as Justice and compassion. Our church does this and has plans to increase our hospitality. I want to be a part of this as I can. So does David.
    Yesterday, the pain I’ve been dealing with and the fatigue got me. I woke with pain in my upper chest and it seemed different from what I have been experiencing. As I have a history of heart issues, I was scared. Women can also have atypical heart symptoms, so all this was concerning. I went to ER and they ran all the tests, did EKGs, and everything came back normal. They determined the pinched nerve and misaligned vertebra were sources of the pain and RXed some better pain meds. Still tired and just resting today. As I have started my job, I didn’t need a bump in the road.
    Jill thank you for your encouragement. Needed that. ❤️ I pray your tooth pain is better and for you as you seek God’s wisdom about surgery.
    Julie, I hope you feel the love from me. You are worthy of love and are beloved.
    Good to hear from you, Robert. I know that strawberry shortcake will be delicious!
    We are experiencing dangerously hot weather this coming week. Praying for workers who must be outside and those who do not have access to a cool place.
    Thanks to my friends here for your prayers, insight, and encouragement. Love to all.

    I’m a social justice internet advocate, sign petitions, send emails, contact law makers.
    Have a strong urge to do this
    Glad to read Jill’s and Ally’s posts . Prayers of joy and thanksgiving for the news from All and Jill regarding health and family. I can surely identify with “ not doing a darned thing for school.” at the end of a.long school year. You’ll bounce back, it’s in your nature! Thank You Lord.
