Today’s Reflection
The more insecure I feel about the state of the world, the more susceptible I am to putting other gods before the Holy One. I fill my heart with empty things, with busyness, with entertainment. I worship the idols of retirement savings, career advancement, or consumerism.
The Holy One invites us to true intimacy, to a relationship that feeds us with abundant love and grace rather than empty worship of the things of the world.
—Beth A. Richardson, Walking in the Wilderness: Seeking God During Lent (Upper Room Books, 2020)
Today’s Question
When you’re tempted to worship empty things instead of the Holy One, what helps you reset?

Today’s Scripture
You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth.
—Exodus 20:4 (NRSVUE)
Prayer for the Week
Holy One, my body, soul, and spirit hunger and thirst for you. Here in this barren wilderness, fill me with your living water. Shape me into the one you would have me become. Amen.

This is a great question and I totally understand where today’s author and the question-asker are coming from.
I have lots of short prayers I pray, often in quick succession. “I know you are taking care of us, Lord.” “Please help me trust you.” “I do trust you, Lord. Praise you and thank you.” “I believe. Please help me with my unbelief.” .”You are here, you are near, you dwell within me (and I in you).” And my biggest go to, “Thy will, thy will, thy will, thy will . . . .”
There are many distractions that take me away from 24/7 focus on God, yet there are times throughout the day when God has my attention. Am I a perfect Christian, by no means but Jesus.
It is very evident that we need Jesus to help us. Thank You, Jesus. And thank God for sending Jesus.
Glad to read your post, Rusty. The Upper Room is trying to resolve the “awaiting moderation”. They have removed an old email and have my correct one. They say it will take time.
Yes, Rusty – “Thy will, Thy will, Thy will…make it my will also.”
It seems like my answer to most questions lately is “intentionality”. But, for me, it’s so true. I must be focused, I must be deliberate. “Lead me in Your righteousness.”
An extremely meaningful session with my spiritual director – unpacking, re-shaping the events of this past month…the state of my 20 year friendship. I am so glad God connected me with this gentle soul. She listens so well, ushers me into the Presence of the Lord. We examine, we pray, we talk…and Spirit is in our midst.
Another incredibly warm day. This morning my walk/run was just with a windbreaker. So wonderful to not have a bulky coat.
Thank you Ally and Rusty for your encouragement and prayers.
Ally – praying for David, for his stability, for his appointments this week.
