New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

To truly be grateful for the meal you are about to share, consider its origins. Take some time to think about the people involved and processes required to grow, produce, and transport the various ingredients for this meal. Be grateful for those who helped to get this food to you, and be aware of how your food’s production affects the earth.

—Sarah E. Bollinger and Angela R. Olsen, The Awakened Life for High School Students: Finding Stillness in an Anxious World, Leader Guide (Upper Room Books, 2020)

Today’s Question

Describe a meal you vividly remember. Who was present? What did you eat? Why do you think this meal stands out in your memory? Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
—John 6:51 (NRSV)

The first thing that came to my mind is the first time I ate filet mignon. My friend, a foodie, had me over and she grilled out. It felt like velvet in my mouth. Growing up, dad had grilled out steaks and he and mom liked theirs well done. The steaks were thin and tough. I never knew beef could have an enjoyable texture. Now, my friend has kinda made me a bit of a foodie. I at least know to buy thick steaks and to not overcook them. I still like mine done a lot more than she does – but not to the point of being like leather. She prefers medium rare to medium, where as I am closer to medium well. Makes me chuckle.
Speaking of food – the restaurant you asked about – Edgar’s – I have not eaten there. But I golf at the course often, as it is very close to my school. My foodie friend has eaten there and did not enjoy it, hence – probably why I have not eaten there. Dad and I golfed there a few times this summer and he actually golfed there Wednesday and got caught in the rain and had to quit after five holes. Did you see the restaurant makeover on the Food Channel – is that how you know of it?
It was great to be on the court yesterday, and my head seemed to hang in there ok. My partner and I won both of our matches, but our team lost the first match, and put us in the consolation match. We won all three courts in the consolation match. Last night I removed the bulky bandage and got a look at things. I have never had stitches before…kinda interesting. Things looked ok, I guess. My eye, underneath the spot, is turning black and blue…well, actually purple and maroon.
Seems like I was just thinking – I can’t believe it is August. And here it is – August 30. May you all enjoy this last Sunday in August.

The number of great meals I’ve had makes it very hard to pick one out. I miss Schneckennoodles, German cinnamon rolls with nuts, raisins, and a brown sugar glaze. Made from a yeast dough. Then there’s a meat soup Soo Ok made with beef, radish, green onions, and cellophane noodles. I could go on.

Enjoyed the mul naengmyun and kimchi for lunch yesterday. Couldn;t have done that without some help from a “kit”. It was a nice way to remember what would have been Soo Ok’s 72nd birthday.

Glad the tennis games went ok, you won your matches, and no problems with the surgery. Have had stitches a few times. The first tine was the worst, the pain killer given so the work could be done was very painful. Am glad August is coming to an end. It’s a long month.

Sunny here today after a gray overcast and half a rainy day yesterday. ZOOM worship at 10 am.Have a blessed day, and yes I am always thankful for the food I have to eat. Thank You, Lord.

Good morning, UR family! I pray that all is well. God is still blessing us over and over again. Thank You, Lord! 1 Peter 5:6-7 says, “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he cares for you.” May the Lord bless you and keep you. I love you all!

I come from a family of fine southern cooks who passed on their love and knowledge to the younger generations. At least once a week I try to cook a meal with fresh local produce. Recently I cooked southern style field peas, sautéed squash, made a tomato and cucumber salad and my mama’s cornbread. David loves to eat and thinks I’m the world’s best cook. Such meals are evocative of those prepared with love by the ladies in my family who have gone to heaven. I feel close to my loved ones when I eat the food they taught me to cook. I’m awed by God’s blessing of such a family as mine.
David is in better spirits but not sleeping well. I am dealing with a sore in my nose that has become infected. I’m taking antibiotics but it’s painful. We appreciate your prayers for us. Having a quiet Sunday and worshipping at home and reading through Mark’s Gospel. Loving Lord, help me know you better through the stories of Jesus. Jill, continued prayers for your healing. Glad you were able to play tennis. BJ, thank you for the reminder to cast our cares on to our Lord. Robert, may you feel God’s comfort as you mourn your beloved. May her memories of her bring a smile. Lou, praying for you and your youngest chick. I know you miss her. Julie, I’m so excited to hear about the kittens! I pray they bring you and Megan much joy and that Tazzie will find in them 2 buddies. I pray all stay safe and have a wonderful Sunday!
