New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

Abba Zeno said, “If a man wants God to hear his prayer quickly, then before he prays for anything else, even his own soul, when he stands and stretches out his hands toward God, he must pray with all his heart for his enemies. Through this action God will hear everything that he asks.”

—Keith Beasley-Topliffe, Editor, Writings of the Desert Fathers & Mothers (Upper Room Books, 2017)

How do you pray for your enemies? Not sure I have enemies I can name, but for those I do not recognize I’m sure I don’t pray nearly hard enough. Certainly those who deny help for the needy, sick, and disabled, harm the environment and wildlife, are racist or disrespectful, and try to solve problems through violence are enemies.
Thankful to be able to read posts from previous days. Glad Rachel’s surgery went well, Larry has no side effects from the vaccine, theres is agreement on the new administration’s actions and dependence on God, Gail’s conflict resolution and Jill’s shorter and improved week at school,Ally and David seem to be making progress. Concern for Marcy and her new meds, prayers for Julie’s tough situation at home.
Met friends yesterday, hopefully helped them be able to connect their computer to ZOOM. Have a vaccine appointment for March 12th, Slowly my model is progressing. Am hopeful I have found mental health help that will assist me in dealing with my son. Have been able to watch online an Apple tv show for which my daughter has designed the costumes. Monday I’m taking a friend to get a much needed shot in her knee after experiencing a fall. Bible study Tuesday on Romans 8: 31-39.
Nothing can separate us from the love of God. Thank You, Lord. Have a blessed Sunday.

Well I related yesterday what that sermon I watched spoke of in regards to this question. The pastor had a problem with a total stranger who was intent on bringing legal action against him. He started with small prayers and was gradually over many years able to forgve and pray for their well being. It is more difficult for me. I currently live with my enemy and h started yealling at me at 7:15 am today. How, as a flawed human being, do I overcome my feelings of stress and anxiety caused by such a caustic indivdual? I need God to lead me through this.
Prayers for Robert and all he does for so many others. Prayers that his new therapy opportunity is effective.
Prayers for Ally and David and Rachel. Thanksgiving for Rachel’s successful surgery, may her pain be minor and her recovery quick.
Prayers for Jill and her students. May Jill recapture the spark and motivation that led her to teaching.

This is a significant ask – for us mere humans – to sincerely pray for our enemies. For me, I must confess to God that this is close to the last thing I desire, and ask Him to work a change in me. I feel like my prayers concerning this would be far from authentic, but I would just be going through the motions. Until He works that change in me, I will continue to seek His grace.
I invited dad over today to watch some golf and football…telling him I would be grading – but if he needed a change of scenery he could come by. He did, for a few hours.
One of the assistant pastors at my church is hosting an open hour zoom meet and greet – where there will be “free flowing conversation”. It begins here shortly, and I am going to check it out. I am looking forward to returning to church, once vaccinated. I miss it quite a bit, increasingly so lately.
While dad was over, we discussed travel possibilities for this spring and summer. We have a rather large credit from our trips being cancelled last April. I was under the impression we would need to book by March and could travel up to 6 months after that. However, what I found on the company’s website makes me believe all travel must be done by May 31 of this year. Seems like there needs to be a bigger window, as vaccinations are now just rolling out. I will have to check on this.
Happy last week of January to all. May this week see continued safety for all of us.
