New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

Note: This week’s New Every Morning includes daily practices (instead of reflection questions) to follow the format of our featured title, Pauses for Pentecost, which offers 50 days of reflections based on a scripture theme and followed by a spiritual practice.

On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit comes to the early disciples not only as wind but also as fire. What do these tongues of fire resting on each of them represent? Surely, it is an outward sign of what the Holy Spirit is doing inside their lives. Think of the associations we make with fire. Can we not suggest with some confidence that the Pentecost fire represents similar kinds of experiences? Can it be that the fire of God’s Spirit is warming cold hearts, joining the family of believers together, bringing sinful tendencies under control, and burning away the rust of iron-hard hearts until they are aflame with the fire of God’s love?

—Trevor Hudson, Pauses for Pentecost: 50 Words for Easter People (Upper Room Books, 2017)

Today’s Practice

As a symbol of the fire of the Holy Spirit, light a candle near where you will spend your day. May it remind you through the day that Jesus wants to baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
—Trevor Hudson, Pauses for Pentecost

Today’s Scripture

[The apostles] saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
—Acts 2:3 (NIV)

Yes, may the Holy Spirit abide in you, guide you, encourage you, and keep you. Learned reading Adam Hamilton’s book on John’s gospel that the Greek word used for the Holy Spirit is like an advocate who is by your side. Hade quite a surprise yesterday visiting a Christian children’s camp in nearby ME. My up the street friend helped start and run this camp. This past weekend at 89 years old he ran the lawnmower on the soccer/softball field. Had a nice lunch on the way home. Will spend another winter in NH unless something happens and someone pays the overpriced purchase price. Will do some things and try again in the spring. We live in strange times. The market changed dramatically.
Prayers for the needs and concerns of NEM, thankful for your joys and blessings. Thank You, Lord.

I have a candle burning on the table every morning as I eat breakfast and read the UR Devotional and NEM. My prefered brand even has a wooden wick which crackles as it burns. Robert, to add to your information regarding the Holy Spirit, the Bible I read is a study Bible and it states that the culture at that time defined such an advocate as someone in a legal sense that pleaded your case and acted on your behalf in legal and other matters and in a sense was your protector.
Piddle Pots and I took a shower together this morning, though of course he was safe behind the clear liner. He is now on my lap as I type and quite upset that my hands are not on him. His teeth are being used to let me know of his displeasure. Also, all four cats slept with me last night and despite a queen sized bed I had to curl up into a ball in order to fit the space alotted to me.
Prayers for Ally as she embarks on her new job opportunity, may it be an answer to prayers. Prayers for April to continue to carve out times of refreshment for her soul amidst her caregiving duties Prayers for Jill and Larry to find common ground regarding their golf schedule and may Larry continue to enjoy good health. Prayers for Lou and her children. Prayers for Rick and his husband. Prayers for Robert as he continues to react to the changing housing market and continues to nurture local friendships.

Thank you, Robert and Julie, both – for sharing some background on the Holy Spirit. I, too, had been told it was somewhat of a legal term, one coming alongside to plead for and protect. Such a comfort.
I am in really good shape with my room. Everything is out, except for my mini fridge. Will move that after lunch. I have arranged several cupboards/cabinets in my new room to my liking. Very pleased with this. My new room is going to be great. So much quieter, and no rooms across the hall. There is a big window outside my door – overlooking a courtyard. It is going to be very good.
Spared most of the bad weather last evening. Some hard rain, but no high winds, nor lightning/thunder. Was able to get in a short run this morning, with only minimal random raindrops.
Your comment about your small portion of the bed made me smile, Julie. Roger (and maybe all cats) have a knack for laying down right in the middle of something. I think he is a symmetrical genius. Lately he has been sleeping downstairs overnight. It is nice to have my full bed.

I have been thinking today of yesterday’s reading. I prayed that the fresh winds of the Holy Spirit blow through my life and blow the unneeded stuff out and refresh my heart.
I have a new candle, which smells wonderful, so I am letting it’s aroma refresh while I’m working in my new office today. I love the tradition of lighting candles for worship to represent the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. He is like a refiner’s fire. Malachi 3:2.
I found some water colors I did summer of 2020 when I took a painting class. I’m going to put them up around my work station. They aren’t that good, but the colors please me and make me happy. I have a doctor’s appt. tomorrow. Dreading it for some reason. Probably because I’m not sure how I will pay for it. Lots of anxiety about it.
Robert, thanks for the information from Adam Hamilton. I recently read his book, Seeing Gray In A World of Black and White. I pray the markets stabilize. David and I hope to move closer to my family, but it isn’t possible right now. Glad you enjoyed the visit to the camp in Maine. Maine is on my bucket list. All of New England, really. Julie, what you said goes along with Romans 8:26. The Holy Spirit intercedes and pleads our case. Thank you to you and Robert for your insights. I’m so glad you are getting lots of good kitty love! Jill, glad things are going well with the move to the new classroom. Sounds like it will be more pleasant and conducive to creating an environment of learning. Every time we change the sheets in our bedroom, our kitties have to check everything out like its all new. Then they lie down in the middle of the bed. Glad Roger seems to be feeling perkier. Lou, glad to hear you got to enjoy some rest and quiet time as your loved one slept. Hope you felt refreshed and renewed. Thanks c so much for your prayers for us. Lou, I’m guessing you are still with your daughter in NYC. I pray y’all have a great time taking in the sights and enjoying your time together. Rick, I lift up you and Scott as you seek God and draw closer together.
My heart is a little heavy as I heard news of the shootings in Tulsa yesterday. How many people have to die before we become proactive and change policy? It is too much to bear.
The song by Keith Green, Rushing Wind, describes how Holy Spirit can work in our hearts. I included the lyrics here and encourage you to give it a listen on YouTube. Love you all.

Rushing wind, blow through this temple,
    Blowing out the dust within,
Come and breathe you breath upon me,
    I’ve been born again.

Holy spirit, I surrender, take me where you want to go,
Plant me by your living water,
Plant me deep so I can grow
