New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

One of life’s hardest tasks comes in answering a young child’s questions about the presence of evil and tragedy in the world. I found myself challenged to tell my son that sometimes people hurt other people because they do not like them and because of the color of their skin. So, I told my son about Trayvon Martin, about how he was killed, and about what was now being done to bring justice for his death. I asked my son if he understood what I was trying to tell him. He said, “Yes,” then returned to playing. He did not understand. But I knew that one day he must, and it will be my responsibility as his father to ensure that he does.

Today’s Question

How can we answer children’s questions about why bad things happen and still encourage them to hope? Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

[God] has told you, human one, what is good and what the Lord requires from you: to do justice, embrace faithful love, and walk humbly with your God.
—Micah 6:8 (CEB)

Excellent topic in our current situation Despite progress in many areas we are struggling at best to deal with an issue that is deadly. How do you explain to children that because people want guns so bad innocent people of all ages end up dead. If lawmakers don’t address the the problem, they should be replaced. Thankfully the people have the power to vote them in or out. Our government is supposed to be
“by, of, and for the people .” Pray for wisdom, healing, guidance and use your thoughts to take action that loves your neighbor as yourself. Thank You, Lord.

Yes, Robert, the problem of gun violence in this country needs to be addressed with honesty and integrity. The leaders keep trying to say that gun control will not save lives but other countries that have outlawed automatic weapons and more do not have such gun violence. The leaders of this country do not speak for their electorates. Poll after poll shows the vast majority of Americans want gun control.
H continues to decline and when I try to discuss this with him he tells me not to say that he is worse. It is as if he thinks if he ignores it the issue will go away. He continues to need help with everyday items and their use. He is also disoriented more often but contnues to deny these problems exist.
Prayers for Ally as she begins her job. Prayers for April and her loved one to enjoy their time together. Prayers for Jill and her friend as they spend precious time together. Prayers for Lou and her children. Prayers for Rick and Scott. Prayers for Robert and his church,, may the church have a future with a pastor that grows the congregation.

This is practically an impossible question – especially pertinent right now to the students at my school. They cry out for justice. But more violence is not the answer. And it is super challenging to let the very slow justice system do its work. There was supposed to be information released today from the city’s police dept regarding the beating to death of our student. I am taping the 6:00 news, as I will be at tennis. Have not had time to google this.
What an absolutely splendid day we had together. Went to our favorite farmers market store where their specialty is donuts. Picked up lots of goodies – donuts, granola, and cookies for dad, Don and my sister. Got plenty of donuts for myself – they are in my freezer. We stopped at some stores, a boutique and had lunch at a wonderful sandwich place. She being a pharmaceutical rep – has the knowledge of specialty shops and restaurants in the area we visited. It was just a super enjoyable day. Unrushed, lots of conversation, a gift.
Big tennis match tonight. Play the only other undefeated team in our flight. Should be fun.

I think the best way (in my opinion) to answer today’s question is teach them today’s scripture and embody it for them: do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Somehow my comment from yesterday did not publish. My biggest blue note right now is the loss of my dear friend Kenny. He leaves a daughter and 2 beautiful grandchildren, whom he adored. Kenny had demons he never conquered, but his heart was the biggest. I never heard him utter a cross word to anyone and he was always doing something to help others. I’m heartbroken, but thankful I had the privilege of being his friend. Please pray for his family.
Robert, prayers for wisdom as you see God’s leading for your church. Julie, prayers continue for you as you deal with H. Jill, my heart breaks for your students and for the family of the young person beaten to death. Glad you had a good day with your friend.
My prayer is that we the people will vote for persons who will work for their constituents instead of lobbyists. The people want common sense gun laws. Even most gun owners are ok with raising age limits and universal background checks. It breaks my heart to see the carnage of the last weeks. Help us, Lord. Peoples’ lives are sacred. They should not be viewed as collateral damage.
May all Jesus followers take up the cause to be like Jesus. Blessings to all.
