New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

Shakespeare wrote these famous words in his comedic play As You Like It. You don’t have to be a theater buff to recognize that a successful theatrical performance requires many individuals to do their part before the curtain goes up. … If anyone fails to do his or her part, the whole production is in jeopardy.

The church is much like a theatrical production in that sense. The church brings together all sorts of people with different likes and dislikes, talents, gifts, passions, and resources. Individually, we may think that what we can contribute isn’t worth much or isn’t very important. Just like in the theater, though, there are no unimportant parts. When we each do our part, the final product is far bigger and better than the mere sum of everyone’s efforts. When the Holy Spirit enters the picture, anything can happen.

—Linda Tower Pevey, We Are the Church … Let’s Act Like It: A Study on the Book of Acts (Upper Room Books, 2019)

Today’s Question

When have you experienced the truth of this statement: When we each do our part, the final product is far bigger and better than the mere sum of everyone’s efforts.? Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

Christ is just like the human body—a body is a unit and has many parts; and all the parts of the body are one body, even though there are many.
—1 Corinthians 12:12 (CEB)

Every Thanksgiving, when my church provides dinner to hundreds of needy people. It takes those of us who show up that day but also everyone in the congregation who donated the various supplies used to prepare the feast. Also the people who have worked over the weeks to cook and prepare the food. The list continues but everyone’s contribution is needed.

I feel like this is a perfect summary for what takes place in a school, especially at the level where the students have various teachers for different subjects. And, I believe it is what Paul had in mind when he spoke of the members of the body…both the human body and the body of Christ. We each have the skills God has blessed us with. We need to stay in our lane, max out our skill for His glory and allow others to do the same. It does, indeed, take a village.
Dad and I got in 11 holes today and then the rains came. I checked the radar – and it was pretty obvious that the rain was only going to get more intense. We headed for the clubhouse and got our clubs loaded into dad’s truck – without ending up too awfully wet. I started out playing lights out, but then came back to earth. Dad was struggling and very frustrated. He has a hard time righting the ship once it gets off course.
Another rain shower is passing through now, but I hope to get out for a walk once it is over. I only did a light run this morning as my legs were fatigued from physical therapy yesterday and tennis last night. Speaking of which, my Monday night team finally notched a win. My partner and I won – a very close match. My partner lives in the same neighborhood as Becky, Don and dad. I enjoy playing with her very much as she never loses confidence and keeps going for her shots.
