Today’s Reflection
When, like Jesus, we regularly retreat in order to attend to God’s Word in an especially focused way, then the time spent in this environment for listening will bear fruit in the many ministries of a spiritually alive life. What are these fruits? They are love and freedom, which nourish our spiritual growth and strengthen us for the work of proclaiming the Good News in word and deed.
—John S. Mogabgab, “In Retreat,” in The Wondrous Mystery: An Upper Room Advent Reader, compiled by Benjamin Howard (Upper Room Books, 2019)
Today’s Question
How often do you allow yourself time alone to pray? How can you find this time during the busy holiday season? Join the conversation.
Today’s Scripture
After saying farewell to them, [Jesus] went up on the mountain to pray.
—Mark 6:46 (NRSVUE)
Prayer for the Week
God, thank you for what is just around the corner. In a season filled with the longest, darkest nights, I await the coming of the most beautiful light. Amen. [prayer adapted from Benjamin Howard’s introduction to The Wondrous Mystery]

My mornings begin in stillness, quietness and prayer. Along with reading.
I am fortunate to live alone without the need to carve out space in a busy household. Now, the busy nature of my mind is often an obstacle.
Wonderful to be in church yesterday, to see parents of a high school friend, to meet a friend of my dad. The pastor of my church has been hosting Advent services at his house on Sunday evenings this month. I was unable to attend the first two – but have attended last week and last evening. Such a wonderful experience. Candle light, quiet music, Scripture reading. Soup afterwards. I hope this tradition continues.
Seeing my hospice patient and her husband today in their home. She is eating minimally, but says a Strawberry milkshake sounds good – so I will take her one. Playing tennis this evening.
I don’t pray as often I could. Advent and Christmas are not so hustle bustle for me. I have time but don’t use it to pray. as i should. I do resist the daily rants from my son who says what I believe is all nonsense.. Thank You, Lord for the strength to resist and for the faith to continue my belief.
