New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

To Jesus, fully alive human beings resemble the living essence of God. God made us in God’s image, fashioned from a sacred blueprint. To the extent that God’s essence is compassion, our essence, likewise, is compassion. When we are most true to ourselves, most in harmony with our created essence, we mirror the very likeness of God. Rooted and restored in God’s love and delight, we become persons of emboldened compassion.

Prayer for the Week

Lord, open our eyes that we may see you in our brothers and sisters.
Lord, open our ears that we may hear the cries of the hungry, the cold, the frightened, the oppressed.
Lord, open our hearts that we may love each other as you love us.
Renew in us your spirit.
Lord, free us and make us one. Amen.

The offering in worship is a spiritual practice that supports compassion. Being thankful for all that God has done for us is another. Reading the stories Jesus told about caring for others adds another spiritual practice. I do thiink that with my parents’ teaching and example, as well as being created in the image of God, that compassion is very much a part of me. The urge to help is very strong. Thank You, Lord

Prayers for increased compassion in heart, for eyes to truly see those who around me, working with others to be Christ to those I serve, pondering scripture in my heart. Lord, keep my heart soft and open.
I talked with the director of adult mental health yesterday about the bullying situation. This is first step and ask your prayers for wisdom and perseverance. Jim, thank you for your wise words yesterday.

Being intentional about gratitude – provides the right space to cultivate compassion. Having an awareness of one’s own wretchedness and being a beneficiary of God’s grace is an impetus for showing compassion to others.
My doubles partner and I had a lovely short trip – enjoyed meals shared, shopping and good tennis on a pleasant summer day. She is easy to travel with and we get along well. And, we qualified for next year’s National Senior Olympic Games.
Ally – praying you will get the support you need in this situation. Glad you were able to speak with the director yesterday. May God grant you wisdom moving forward.

Seeing all the need in the world sparks my compassion. Seeing the need in my area sparks my compassion. Seeing the need in my friends sparks my compassion. There is so much need in the world.

Quiet time to pray helps me develop compassion. Distance, both physical and emotional, from certain people helps me have the security and peace that I need to be compassionate. Sometimes I just look at other people and ask myself to see them as God sees them. That helps me develop compassion.
