New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

Sometimes we inherit battles that are not our own. The weight of showing up for someone else to help them battle what is oppressing them is no small matter. We should never take battle lightly. No matter who wins, battle takes its toll on everyone—victors and losers alike. . . .

When you find yourself like David, brought into a battle that did not begin with you, don’t forget to pray for divine endurance and protection. You will need it. But also remember that if God has called you to it, God will see you through. Our on-time God knows exactly when to tag you into this relay race of life. We need you. We need your tenacity. We need your commitment. We need your voice. Stay in the battle. When we fight righteous battles, we will come out victorious.

Today’s Question

Have you ever walked into the middle of a battle that you didn’t anticipate? What did you do? How did you respond? [questions by Gabby Cudjoe-Wilkes in Disciplines 2024] Join the conversation.

Today’s Scripture

David rose early in the morning, left the sheep with a keeper, took the provisions, and went as Jesse had commanded him. He came to the encampment as the army was going forth to the battle line, shouting the war cry.
—1 Samuel 17:20 (NRSVUE)

Prayer for the Week

God, give me the boldness to stand up to oppression, trouble, and affliction. I ask that you strengthen me for those battles: show me my past wins, reveal to me my best tools, remind me who and what I am fighting for, and protect me along the way. Amen. Something More

Psalms for Black Lives, written by pastors Gabby Cudjoe-Wilkes and Andrew Wilkes, is a collection of thirty devotions, each containing a psalm, a reflection, and an invitation for the reader to develop a justice imagination. It is the perfect resource to add to your bookshelf as we celebrate the Juneteenth holiday this week. May we join with God and with each other in the holy work of pursuing justice, undoing structural racism, and building a society that truly values Black lives. Learn more here.

Have you ever walked into the middle of a battle that you didn’t anticipate? Without thinking to hard, I think I have to say NO. I try to avoid confrontation, find ways around it, resolve it without a fight.
At the moment I am in the middle of an argument between my son and my daughter. I want a peaceful resolution. Prayers for God’s guidance.
It will be hotter longer today, thankful for resources to keep hydrated and cool. Prayers for safety in this heatwave, God’;s guidance that we do what should be done to eliminate our part in causing global warming. Thank You, Lord.

I, like Robert, can’t think of something specific at the moment. But – I would hope my reaction would be to take a step back, go to my Heavenly Father – seeking wisdom and discernment, and then move forward cautiously, guardedly, and steadily. I would desire to listen well and not be reactionary.
This past week’s module in my course was about being a healing presence and holding space for another. This morning the next module was released and I have been working on it, as I plan to be out of town this weekend and need to get much accomplished today. The main topic this week is stepping toward suffering. Knowledge of these is crucial to assisting care. I feel I am an empathetic person, but there are subtle things involved. And, an emphasis on walking alongside, as opposed to be a “fixer”.
Very warm here, taking extra time to water my plants in the morning. Having dinner with my tennis friend today. It will be so welcome, after studying most of the day.
This weekend I will be with my friend as we go to out of state to her son’s (my god son’s) basketball tournament. We have been speaking minimally as she has been so busy and her daughter has been in town. She is engaged and they picked out a venue for a July 2025 wedding. Much to catch up on.
