Today’s Reflection
Whatever you do, don’t try to manufacture a longing. Don’t leave thinking you heard that you “should” long for God, and then try harder. A longing for God is not something you can produce; there’s no instructional YouTube video to show you how to get it right. If there were, the danger would be that you would succeed and show off your longing for God as something to be proud of, maybe something that someone—or better yet, God—would give you a special plaque for. . . .
Don’t get down on yourself for not knowing whether you truly long for God! Remember Premise #1: You do long for God. Remember that even the desire to desire God is a sign of a genuine desire for God because it mirrors God’s own desire to be with us.

for the living God.

A complicated reflection ending today. Yes. God instilled a longing for Him in us when we were created. How and when we recognize that differs greatly. In my life it took time, almost 50 years, to be fully recognized, Thankfully, I believe it has remained with me these past 27 years. No one knows me like God knows me. That is a very helpful understanding. Thank You, Lord.
I try to remain focused in prayer, trying to settle into His Presence. I talk it out with my spiritual director. I try to listen to more spiritual podcasts. Linger a bit longer in the Psalms.
Spent the afternoon with my friend and her dogs. Just lazed around, watching the golf on tv, taking it easy. Recovering from tennis yesterday, she also played a match last night. I took over some pork chops I got at a local meat place and she grilled them up. A nice leisurely walk with her dogs after dinner.
