New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

However the desire for God begins to show up in our lives, we can trust that God’s grace is at work, that a divine love is active in us, waking us up to the deepest—often hidden—reason for our very existence and freeing us to begin to follow that longing to its truest end: friendship with God, genuine enjoyment of the One who made us.

—L. Roger Owens, Everyday Contemplative: The Way of Prayerful Living (Upper Room Books, 2021)

Today’s Scripture

Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

While I was raised, grew up, in a Christian home, I don’t think my longing for God started until I was in the army. Even there it took some time to go from respite to searching. At any rate it was instilled in me in basic training, continued in infantry school and lasted all the way through active duty. Were there lulls after that time? Yes, but the longing always returned and was signed and sealed after my wife passed away. Book/Bible study, being on the worship team, helping a pastor-less church, and now serving close to a pastor keep the longing nourished. Thank You, Lord.

The longing has been growing since I went back to the church I now attend. I want to be more involved in church and I want God to be more a part of my life.

I first noticed a longing for God when I realized my thoughts and actions were poor and that I needed God’s help to change me. Since then, a true longing…wanting more intimacy with Him has grown. Through surrender, I open more avenues to my heart for His transformative work. Acknowledging I cannot impart the change desired, but I must allow Him to change me.
Doing lots of little things this morning…letter of recommendation, reviewing summer assignments my students have submitted, working on my coursework. I also watered my flowers outside – in preparation for a very hot day. I have two tennis matches today – one at noon and one at 6:30. The noon team is the senior women’s team – the first match I can play because I had been in school previously. This team is in second place and I am playing with a person I have never played in a match with before. We played together Tuesday and I think our games complement each other well. It should be fun. Hoping to do well enough to earn a spot in the lineup next week against the first place team. Playing this evening with my favorite partner – we haven’t played since last summer. We are both very much looking forward to it. Grateful to be able to play.

Ally – holding both you and David in prayer, as well as your sister. May God grant you the wisdom, discernment and opportunity for a job.
