Today’s Reflection
Kalief Browder never should have been locked up. At age 16 he was jailed on charges he stole a backpack because his parents couldn’t pay his $3,000 cash bail. Without ever standing trial, he was imprisoned for three years—nearly two years in solitary confinement. . . .
After release, he never recovered from prison’s indignities, including multiple assaults and food deprivation during solitary. In 2015 he committed suicide at his parents’ home. His tragedy illustrates the soul-killing costs of a criminal justice system that disproportionately confines America’s Black citizens. As one author has described the mass incarceration of Black males in the U.S., it’s “the new Jim Crow.”

I have felt God’s presence and have been helped by God, but I’m having a hard time remembering a time when It was because I was or felt alone. More than ever I accept the truth that God is always present. God encompasses the whole world, “He has the whole world in His hands.
Zoom all church meeting tonight to discuss moving forward. Prayers for God’s wisdom and guidance. While we have some support from our district superintendent and the conference , it is mainly advice and help with communion. There may be some classes, have to explore that possibility.
It’s an overcast, looks like rain day in the White Mountains Thankful we are cool.
Prayers for heat relief, resolutions to water problems, forest fires controlled, put out. Need to be more cautious as infection rates rise. Planning a trip to retrieve items in Poconos storage next week. Some times
well laid plans don’t work out. Thankful we have a roof over our head.
I have and still do often feel alone and indeed at such times I turn to the Lord. I especially pray each day for his strength and patience for the day as I deal with h’s continued decline.
The plumber was due to come this morning to replace the leaking toilet. However, I received a phone call this morning that it needs to be rescheduled for tomorrow due to a family emergency for the technician who was scheduled to do the work.
Prayers for Ally as she continues to seek disability benefits and a partime job, may God guide her. Prayers for April and her loved one, for strength and endurance. Prayers for Jill and her family. Prayers for Lou and her family. Prayers for Rick and Scott. Prayers for Robert and his church, as they each do their part as the body of Christ. Prayers also for Robert regarding the postponed plans for a move, with the new housing market and mortgage rates, perhaps God had a hand in the lack of success.
I saw first-hand in my work in corrections, the fallout of mass incarceration. The USA has a larger percent of its population in confinement than any other nation, except for China. There are disparities in numbers of Black and Native people confined in relation to total populations. Racism is systemic at all levels of the legal system. Security protocols are designed for young male offenders and result in women offenders being incarcerated long distances from their children, and pregnant women offenders having to go through labor in shackles. Talk about feeling alone. I felt most alone myself when David was in hospital for COVID and I was quarantined. I did not see another person for over 2 weeks. God prompted me to reach out on NEM. The prayers and love Got sent me through you folks got me through. If I have never said thank you, I do now, from the bottom of my heart.
I had my mental health intake appointment yesterday and will be working with an awesome counselor. Experience with nurse practitioner was not so positive. but God worked that out. I was assigned to another dr, who came recommended highly by the counselor. I know God is working. We are still waiting to hear from home health about David’s therapy. I also spoke with my attorney, who advised that even a part-time job can hurt my chances of disability being approved. We are praying for wisdom about how to increase our income. We know God is present.
Robert, prayers for your church as you seek God. Julie, prayers for your plumbing issues. Jill, stay cool as you can as you enjoy tennis. Thank you for your heart for kids. Lou, my prayers are with you as you deal with the lingering hurt of your divorce. I’m thankful you have your kids and meaningful work. April, prayers are with you as you care for your loved one. Prayers for Rick and Scott as well. Thank You Lord, for this forum. Everyone stay hydrated through this heatwave. Prayers for our vulnerable friends. Check on your neighbors. Much love to all.
When I felt alone during mom’s struggles – a card would show up in my mailbox, an email would pop up, a text. People following the nudging of the Holy Spirit to reach out to just let me know they were praying for me and mom. I try to be very aware and faithfully obedient to these nudges. A text could lift me so much.
The humidity broke and dad and I had a lovely day for golf today. We got paired up with a man and his grandson – who was in college. They were very nice to play with. I had my best score ever and am just sitting in wonderment at this week. I played four tennis matches – some of them super high intensity – and my body responded well, in terms of lack of soreness and stiffness. Last night during the match my legs were fatigued – but of course that is to be expected. I am so grateful to be able to participate to the level I currently am.
Dog sitting for a friend today and tomorrow morning. I stopped by after golf, took him for a walk and we took a nap together on the couch. I am now home with Roger – to feed him and give him his shot. Doing some school work and likely will mow my lawn, before returning to the dog to spend the night (Roger will not be happy).
