Today’s Reflection
Note: This week’s New Every Morning reflections are structured differently to follow the format of our featured title, Rally: Communal Prayers for Lovers of Jesus and Justice, which addresses issues of social justice through reflection and over 50 call-and-response prayers known as litanies.
For my husband, kids, and me, Family Dinner is a foreshadow of our eternal vocation as bread-breakers and other-lovers. It is a reminder that we don’t have to wait for one glorious day in the future to experience the kingdom of God. The banquet table set for every tribe, tongue, and nation can be found here and now. If heaven will be filled with surprising friendships (which it will be), I want my living room to be too.

Today’s Question
What does “family dinner” look like for you? Join the conversation.
Today’s Scripture
Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
—Acts 2:46-47, NRSV
Today’s Litany
ONE: For building our own busted-up empires instead of your upside-down
kingdom
And viewing ourselves as haves and “those people” as have-nots—
ALL: God, forgive us.
ONE: For othering and running after the American Dream with more passion
and fervor than we’ve pursued thy kingdom come—
ALL: God, forgive us.
ONE: For collecting shiny things, for furthering the wealth gap,
And for being complacent with the suffering of our neighbors—
ALL: God, forgive us.
Submit your prayer to The Upper Room.
Something More
The final litany from Rally was written by Britney Winn Lee in the beginning days of the global pandemic. This prayer reminds us that hope endures; goodness prevails; people surprise us; and love cannot, has not, will not fail. Watch and listen.

My son often prepares the one meal a day we share. Our eating habits vary and this is the one meal we eat at the same time. Sometimes we order or eat out. On most Saturdays I have lunch with church friends, we gather for some cocoa, coffee, or tea and then go next door for lunch. As the weather warms up, ice cream at a third shop is possible. Two big break throughs yesterday with my son: agreement on past relationship description and a personality type test. Have shared this information with my counselor who I will meet via ZOOM today. Progress too on the Brill car model, the tv table is ready to cut, then assemble. Hope to see how all of you are doing later today. I pray you your families, and friends are doing well. Thank You, Lord
Megan and I eat together but in front of the TV each evening. We spend time together throughout the day and have conversation then. Growing up we ate at the table only when my father showed up. It is fraught with horror fillled memories including the entire table and everyone’s meals being overturned. But my best memories are of Sunday dinners at my grandparents which were full of joy and laughter. My father never attended.
I do not think of the man I referred to above as my father. He is just the individual who fathered me, much like a sperm donor. I did not attend his funeral and I know of no one who did.
The cat was already adopted, which is good for him but I am devastated. Next time no one is taling me out of adopting a cat I have such a strong connection with. Also the woman did not return my text.
Prayers for ally’s and David’s health. Prayers for Jill’s health to remain well through tennis season. Prayers for Lou as she travels. Prayers for Robert and Erich as they work on their relationship.
“Family Dinner” for me in the present, is David and me in front of the TV. I cherish visits to my sister, when David and I sit down for dinner with sis and my bro in-law. I look forward to the day when we will sit down with our other family members for a holiday meal. One the things I miss most from the past are big family gatherings and Sunday supper with my immediate family. Such sweet memories. David got a good report from his cardiologist. He did recommend that David have a nuclear stress test to rule out any problems. That is scheduled for May 26. I have possible job opportunity doing telework in case management. I will have flexible hours and partnering with a friend and former colleague. If everything works out, I’ll start June 1. A friend and fellow music therapist has also approached Mr about going back to the forensic hospital where I worked until 2016. I did enjoy working with forensic clients. I’m not sure I still have the stamina for this work, but I’m praying about it and ask that y’all pray for us in this time of transition. Pray that I stay open to God’s leading. Robert, prayers for you and Erich as you work on your relationship. Thanks so much for your prayers. Julie, I’m so sorry about the Kitty. I’m glad you reached out to the person you met shopping. She knows that you care, whatever she decides to do. Thank you for your prayers. Jill, I’m glad you have Roger and pray that your work with your students continues to bear fruit. Praying traveling graces for Lou. Prayers for all who post here. Blessings to all.
Mealtimes currently are just me and my sport’s page from the local newspaper or USA today. Roger usually swings by if I have prepared something from the grill. He will get up on his hind legs and rest his front legs on my thigh -waiting for me to give him some bites.
But I do enjoy dining with others – it includes tasty food, savory conversation and no concern for time. It’s about being in the moment, listening well.
Tennis surely did last until 11:00 pm last night. My match was quick and not competitive, disappointingly. I would rather have a very competitive match and lose, than win in a rout like last night. The team won 4-1, so we are off to a good start.
Looks like we might be consistently moving towards warmer weather – so I am thinking about when I will be making purchases for my garden. Dad found what he wanted yesterday. I am hoping to get most of my flats this weekend.
I continue to get some grading done at school, and my stack is noticeably reducing. I am hopeful to be finished with the stack come the end of the school day Friday. Then I can focus on preparing exams.
